Legacy of the Sith--The Fourth Sith Empire

Part I : Welcome and Introduction by Lord Scourge, Sith Historian

Allow me to introduce the Sith Holocron section of our forums. These forums are structured by time period, and arranged for discussion of events within each period. At the beginning of each thread, I will be writing articles telling the history of the Sith, and while everyone can reply to the threads following each article, I’m hoping people will also create new threads, where we can answer questions about events in those periods.

The periods I have chosen are:

Origins of the Sith and the Ancient Sith Empire

This forum is for discussing how the Sith came to be created, how the Sith were exiled across the galaxy to find a primitive species who then thrived under Sith rule, becoming the homeworld of the Sith Empire. Or rather, the First Sith Empire, for there have been several. Most of that information is conjecture based on varied references from other sources, but the period continues through to the earliest told Star Wars stories, the Tales of the Jedi comics series Golden Age of the Sith and Fall of the Sith Empire.

The Sith Wars and the Second Sith Empire

One millennia after the end of the First Sith Empire saw the birth of a second one. This forum is to discuss how Sith teachings were passed on from the last Sith Emperor to a Dark Jedi, who then passed those teachings on to others. Those others began a series of wars that devastated the galaxy, first one Sith War, then the Mandalorian War, then a second Sith War, often called the Jedi Civil War, with more information about this period still being discovered. This period includes the Tales of the Jedi comics series Knights of the Old Republic, The Freedon Nadd Uprising, Dark Lords of the Sith, The Sith War and Redemption, along with the video game series Knights of the Old Republic I, II and presumably an upcoming conclusion to that trilogy. Additionally, an upcoming comic series, also called Knights of the Old Republic, will take place in between the Tales of the Jedi series and the Knights of the Old Republic games.

The Brotherhood of Darkness and the New Sith Order

However the Second Sith Empire finally fell, the Sith Order was not reformed until roughly two thousands year later. At that time, Darth Ruin founded a Brotherhood of Darkness that lasted for a millennium, and at its demise a single Sith remained. That Sith, Darth Bane, reformed the Order again, and his New Sith lasted for another thousand years until the rise of the Third Sith Empire. Like the earliest period, most information about this time comes from a number of references in other sources, and only a few short stories and the comics series Jedi vs. Sith provide valuable information. Fortunately, either one or two novels set in the time of Darth Bane are expected to be released in the upcoming year.

Rise and Fall of the Galactic, or Third Sith Empire

This period is the most well-described in Star Wars history, as it has all the canon material surrounding the six-movie saga, the novels and other adaptations, along with any number of stories set between and around the movies. Only that information that involves the Sith or other powerful adepts of the Dark Side is of interest to us, but there is still an impressive library of knowledge to assemble for this era. I have chosen the lifetime of Anakin Skywalker, Lord Vader, for the boundaries of this period, as it is clearly his life that transformed the galaxy through the destruction of the Jedi, and then of the Sith.

The Sith Interregnum

Technically this would be the Third Sith Interregnum, as there were two previous periods that are notable between the fall of one Sith Order and the rise of the next. Six hundred years passed between the fall of the Ancient Sith Empire and Freedon Nadd’s establishment of a Sith monarchy on Onderon which led to the Empire-building of Exar Kun and Darth Revan. Two thousand years passed between the fall of the Second Sith Empire founded by Revan, and the rise of Darth Ruin and his Brotherhood of Darkness. However, while those two periods are marked with a lack of any reports of powerful Dark Siders who could potentially revive the Sith, in the aftermath of Darth Sidious’ fall, dozens of Dark Side adepts were free to explore and exploit the galaxy. Like the previous interruptions in Sith power, this one cannot last forever, as the seeds of our return have been sown deeply. This period includes all the stories that take place at least a few months after the Battle of Endor, up through the New Jedi Order.

The Sith Legacy

We have returned. The Expanded Universe is extending into the Legacy Era, that will have the return of Lumiya, and who knows which other figures linked to the Sith. This thread is for the official developments in the re-emergence of the Sith, along with the ways in which Darth Chick’s Fourth Sith Empire is bringing about our return to power. Additionally, this forum is for issues that span the eras of Sith history, such as comparisons of events, lore or technology from different incarnations of the Sith.
