When they saw their lasers were futile, the men scattered, leaving a body behind whose laser had been deflected right back into his face, leaving a smoking charred hole. Dan quickly motioned with his hands to tell them to distract the Vader model, and they feigned running in terror to lure the Vader deep into the room, hacking after men or sending them flying with concussive sonic waves. Occasionally there would be a terrible scream as one would fall under his blade, or a sickening crunch as one was flung into a wall or something similar. Nevertheless, the men carried on, while Dan dashed around and gathered as many grenades as he could.
He used a piece of wire to tie them all together and bent the end into a hook. He then moulded a tiny piece of plastic explosive and stuck it to the grenade bundle. Satisfied with his makeshift bomb, Dan once again signalled with his hands for his men to open fire on the Vader. They instantly stopped their 'fleeing' and rolled into cover, before opening up on Vader from all angles. With lasers flying everywhere the Vader could not deflect them all and several hit his armour, chewing it up and leaving black pieces on the ground like tar from a freshly laid road. The Vader began to retreat into a corner, and as he did he paused to send a sonic wave at a trio of men taking cover behind an upturned table.
As he did that, Dan saw his chance and dashed in, lunging forward with great precision to hook the bundle onto Vader's belt. Instantly he charged out of the room, followed by as many of his platoon as were there, except for one. Dan had to set off the bundle by pressing the activation key on any of the grenades with the Force - quite a strenuous task for one like Dan, especially when he was exhausted from combat. Yet he couldn't activate them because one was still in there - Lieutenant McCoy. He had grabbed both the hands of the Vader and was not letting go, preventing the Vader from getting the bundle off of it's belt.
"McCoy! Get out of there!" Dan cried, waving frantically. Fortunately the droids had left - the Inquisitors clearly thought the Vader would be capable enough to dispatch them all. But McCoy held on, on the floor and holding the Vader off from crushing him with his feet. "No Dan, I've got to make sure this goes off. If it's by his feet, he won't get destroyed," McCoy said in a remarkably calm voice - the sort of calm that a man can only have once he is close to death and he knows what his true purpose is.
But Dan couldn't bring himself to do it. McCoy had served with him for six years, they had saved each others lives on numerous occasions and each trusted the other completely. They were like brothers. To his surprise, Dan felt tears rolling down behind his helmet. "I can't do it Len."
McCoy suddenly went still. Dan immedietly knew what was happening and charged forth, his arm outstretched, but two men grabbed him and held him back. The moment after there was a blinding white flash and a tremendous rush of heat that they all burned under despite their armour. Then there was the sound, a deafening explosion. Then... nothing. Just ringing. Dan screamed, still holding his hand out to his friend, crying properly now. He had known. All along he had known something was going to happen. Now he had to honour his friend. McCoy's sacrifice had destroyed the Vader and allowed them to continue their mission. His sacrifice couldn't be in vain. They had to succeed.
With steely determination Dan stood and stormed down the hallway, smashed through the piles of droid parts from the earlier battle, and set off for the Grand Inquisitor's office - their target. Silently his men rose and followed him, falling into perfect formation. They all knew that they were going to kill every damned Inquisitor they found. Behind them they left a blackened room, filled with burning furniature and bodies, and a pile of molten black armour and circuitry, standing over a body that was barely even ash. _________________
