Bye Bye Tony

Tony Blair's announced he's stepping down as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom...

He's the only British PM I remember since my travels to the UK. Sad Bye bye Tony.

Oh, and I suppose this could also be for political discussions of the UK.
Darth Thrax

I just read it on the internet. Goodbye Tony.
Darth Barad-Dur

Tony Blair's leaving??? I did not know that.
Emperor Shadow

27 June of this year, he announced.
Darth Barad-Dur

Wow......That's intresting. How long does the PM usually serve? I forget.
Emperor Shadow

It's up to the House of Commons, really. There must be a new Parliment every five years but the PM can go with every one for 5-50 years, it doesn't really matter.
Darth Barad-Dur

It makes since that he would resign. I wouldn't want to be in politics for fifty years. Wink
Emperor Shadow

The Labour Party forced him out... kind of like his idol, former PM Thatcher.
Darth Thrax

Well he had a good run so heres one last adios.
Supreme Commander Alor

we mourn the loss of yet another great English leader (after so many really bad ones)
Embeion

Tony was good, rather have him as our president..but that dang law not letting Foriegn born people lead our country. But they let someone who..eh im not gonna go there.
Darth Thrax

I know who you're talking about Embieon and I agree witcha.

I'm not too sure what this is supposed to mean, Thatcher was Bad, granted and Major was not good, yet its not like there have been a string of bad leaders....

I really like Tony Blair, he was honest and one hell of a politician.... The country's going miss him, but i can wait to see what Gordon Brown, his apparently unchallenged successor for the Leadership of the party, (and probably PM since the other political parties don't appeal to a wider spectrum of people), fares.....
He's Scottish to that should always be interesting.

I was thinking further into the past (George III, and his family)
Xander Vos

They weren't Prime Ministers, and weren't elected.

Prime Ministers can serve as long as the country wants them. As our country shows, we've had - at one point - the same Prime Minister for twenty years (Robert Menzies from 49-64) and our current Prime Minister, John Howard, has been Prime Minister since 1994, although he's about to be beaten by Kevin Rudd, who is much better IMO.

Tony Blair always crossed me as the John Howard of England, following America blindly as an ally. England and Australia were the two main Commonwealth countries to go into Iraq against the public's opinion, sadly.
Supreme Commander Alor

i said leader, not PM or elected leader

(Damn, we just can't stop)
Xander Vos

Confused Stop what?? You seem to think I'm arguing with you right now when I'm not... Just stop thinking everything revolves around you and for once think that maybe I'm just adding to the discussion in the thread and not affronting your honour.
Supreme Commander Alor

jeez, don't make your comments/posts so stinging, they burn
Xander Vos

Confused What the hell? That wasn't even funny...
Supreme Commander Alor

(i am done, tired out by this endless bickering)
Xander Vos

Argh, you're so infuriating! That's the thing! This isn't bickering! This is me posting in the thread, and you saying "Wah, he's being mean to me" and then when I reply and say I'm not, you take that as a worse insult, and suddenly "we're" bickering. Just stop it, please, I want to be able to participate in discussions here without you claiming I'm insulting you.
Supreme Commander Alor

(i didn't say that you were being mean at first, i was protecting my post, and clarifying the issue of what i meant. But sure, i've only been saying to stop for the past half-hour)
Darth Duff

Ok you to stop it, its getting tedious now

Back on topic

Arh, right, i see what you mean but i was assuming in your comment "after so many bad ones" That it was a continual thing, weve had some quite good leaders in the past and bad ones, yet that is life
Grand Inquisitor Prognie

Every country will have a good leader and a bad leader, it's unavoidable. You just can't have good leaders all the time. Like a balance almost.
Supreme Commander Alor

Bush being on what side of the scale?

man, why can't we get leaders like the other countries.

Good, truthful (to an extent), strong and honorable, (like Tony).
Grand Inquisitor Prognie

Eh, lets not turn this into a political debate. Because some will say Bush is doing a good job leading while others will spit vitriol at the very thought. Tony's problem is that he's riding off of Bush's plan, while hurting his own image.
Xander Vos

Australia has had quite a few good leaders, Curtin, Menzies, Whitlam (Though he got sacked by the Governor-General Razz) Keating, and hopefully Rudd. Very Happy
Emperor Shadow

Political debate? Why not?!

Alas, Tony Blair... I still love you even though the rest of the Labour Party doesn't.
Grand Inquisitor Prognie

They tend to never end nicely, I'm all for hot topic issues but not when it equals people getting too crazy.
Darth Barad-Dur

Sadly that happens to too many topics.
Embeion

Hmm, who will President Bush appoint in his place Razz
