I think he was originally was human, but he became so consumed with the Darkside that he eventualy lost all physical appearance. Like the ringwraiths from Lord of the Rings, his power basically made him nothing, hence Nihil"meaning nothing in Latin. That is why I like him the best of the Sith. he was so poweful he had no physical appearance.

I think he was the true enbodyment of the dark side. He became so consumed by his power he simply became the dark side.
