Eragon and Star WarsDamn...I just came back from the movie Eragon (again) and I just noticed the similarities between Star Wars and it! *(WARNING, THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!)*
First off, the basic plot line mirrors that of A New Hope. Eragon is a one of the last Dragon Riders (similar to Luke being the one of the last Jedi) and has a special talent (like Luke's ability with the Force). He is a farmboy (like Luke) who would have never thought of ever being important. Also, while he was away, his uncle was killed by agents of the evil people (like Owen and Baru [SP?] being killed by the Stormtroopers). He is also trained by another Dragon Rider, Brom (like Obi-Wan training Luke). The area it is set in is ruled by an evil Lord who took over the land by betraying his order (like Vader betraying the Jedi) and virtually drove the Dragon Riders to extinction (like the purge of the Jedi). The only hope for the rebellion against the evil rulers is the Dragon Rider Eragon (like Luke being the only hope for the Rebellion). Eragon saves a lady (similar to Luke saving Leia) and his friend, Brom, dies (like Obi-Wan on the Death Star) while they were saving the lady. The ending battle is against the secret rebel outpost that they found by following Eragon (like the Empire placing a tracker on the Millenium Falcon and finding the base on Yavin IV). Then, the evil people lose and hope is restored to liberate everyone!
Now, if I missed anything, please add.

You missed that the author admits he was heavily influenced by Star Wars.

Thanks, I had forgotten. My brother is so convinced that Paolini and the books/movies aren't (which it just his passionate opinion) that he has threatened me. Oh, brotherly love...
Emperor Shadow

I refuse to read them for the following reason:
Tolkien spawned Earthsea. Earthsea is a LotR rip-off. Star Wars influenced Eragon.
Why would I want to read two originial and one rip-off in the same book?
Darth Validus
I never read them. I can't stand reading unless it involves the Lord of the Rings of Star Wars. My brother read them, however, and persuaded me to see the movie. It was better, IMO, than critics said.

Emperor Shadow
Bleh. I'm going to breakdown and see the movie I'm sure. Which will make me read the book. Which will make me cry because it's so bad.

lol...I only got five sentences through the LOTR book (the big one with all three books in one). There is no way I'm reading Eragon or Eldest or the third one when it comes out.

Durza is a whimpy shade...he's not even that powerful of a shade.
He got beat by a kid..so what if he is a dragon rider..But Durza was a shade..He should beable to rip Eragons head off his shoulders.
Lord Angmar
I agree there If there was Another Shade that woulld be cooler. Im going to refrase my statement Not Durza, but Shades would have to be my Favorite Characters.(Anyone that has read the second book tell me are there any shades or was Durza like the only one.)

The coolest Person im not Kidding has got to be Durza"s Captain of the Army, or King Galbatronix and Murtagh.

I think if you take Eragon for what it is, then it's okay. Like, I don't think about anything else, I just read it for the enjoyment of a fantasy book. Because as far as fantasy books go, it's not that bad. Though I am sure when you compare it to other fantasy books and find all the comparisons to star wars, it does indeed lose it's touch.
Darth Ezan
Eragon is in some ways like star wars but in some ways COMPLETELY different, like the "Everything has a secret name" thing, I loved how they mixed it in with magic, I just got done reading Eldest and I absoultely love the twists he put in, Christopher Paolini is a great writer, though he has his faults.
Lord Legacy
yesyes it is a very wonderful series, he created an entire language and world all his own just because it has some parralless to star wars doesnt mean it isnt good if you think about it stars wars has some paralles to lord of the rings but star wars still is fantastic

Yeah, there is always going to be people taking from other authors. I mean, can we say anything about Tolkein taking a lot of his inspiration from Beowulf? Or even a lot of other fantasy writers taking ideas from Lloyd Alexander. There aren't many original writers anymore, most ideas have been taken.
Lord Angmar
True, but I think Tolkein acheived individuality with the whole concept of a One ring and stuff. Otherwise it could be considerdd copying
Lord Legacy
yesevery author takes peices from the authors he liked and that influenced him so there ya go

Darth Ezan

The movie somewhat sucked and was good, I give it a 2 out of 4.

The idea of the ringer-giver was actually taken from Beowulf...

You are soooooooooo right Validus!!!!!!!!!Also in the second book Eragon meets an old Dragon Rider like Luke meets Yoda.He (Eragon) also has a vision thingy that his friends are in trouble in the second book just like Luke.

To me Eragon was a complete dissapointment, and I hated it immensly. Will, don't bother with it, its a horrible book by a boy who tried to write an epic and failed miserably. The movie - I thought foolishly - could not possibly be worse than the book. I was wrong. Huge cuts in the plot, poor acting, and lack of any spectacular fighting scenes left me elated when the reel burned through five minutes from the end allowing me to get my money back.
In complete contrast, its sequel Eldest was fantastic. Yes, you would have to endure Eragon to get the most out of Eldest, but reading Eldest, I found it had been worth it, though I would never again read Eragon. Eldest was much better, and suceeded slightly better in the epic-rating. If anything, it was ten times better than Eragon could ever have been.
I only hope the drastic improvement continues in the third book, and that it is even better.

Grand Inquisitor Prognie

Epic? Don't think so, it wouldn't even fall under it considering epics are poetic.
Also, the movie is all right for those who have not read the book. Because I've spoken to a tons of people regarding the movie and it was split in half. Those who had read the book hated the movie, those who were oblivious to the book liked the movie. The fact that you know what is missing is what makes you hate it, just like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
I do agree that Eldest is good, it has its plot twists and to be honest I didn't want to put the book down once I got into it.
Xander Vos
It attempts to be epic, I never said it was.
My sister, who hadn't read the book hated the movie as well.
Yes, it was, though I'm not on the edge of my seat for the third, I can wait.
Grand Inquisitor Prognie
It can't be an epic, it can't be an epic because it's a novel and not a dramatic poem. that's crucial, without that it can't be or attempt to be an epic.
Xander Vos
An epic isn't confined to poetry...
Darth Virek
Even with all its copies Eragon and Eldest are pretty good but they did a absolutely HORRIBLE job on the movie like Xander Vos said.
Darth Barad-Dur
The movie was an abysmal faliure. LOTR and Eragon were both transformed into only LOTR and Eragon in name. I mean, they left out so many freakn things in both. It's almost entire diffrent stories.
High Commander Vexen
The LOTR movies where awesome. And I have read the 3 movie books, the Simarillion and the Hobbit, they come pretty damn close.
Darth Barad-Dur
Except for the major deviation from the books. Like, when the Witchking comes into the uppermost circles of Minas Tirith, and knocks Gandalf on his butt and Pippen rushes to save him. Or, when Treebeard says they decided not to go to war, and only does when he comes across the dead trees. And, Frodo sending Sam away. The movies aren't close to the books.
Now, don't get me wrong, they were awesome. They were superb from the movie goers point of view. But, from the purist view, they could have done alot better.
Grand Inquisitor Prognie
Hm, I thought you meant Epic as in, style of poetry and completely forgot about epic, a sub-genre of fantasy. Disregard my comments, though I am curious as to why you feel it fails as an epic?
Xander Vos
Because its about a teenage boy trying to save the world,*******to whatshisface the whole way.
LOTR was a unique idea, and was thus a brilliant epic. Even Star Wars, I guess, could be considered an epic. Both were original, brilliant ideas.
Eragon was a repeated idea of two brilliant originals, and failed to even live up to them.

High Commander Vexen

A stronger word is not needed.
Probably our word censor. It's set to strike that with asterisks or 'banana,' if memory serves.

It is to express annoyance.
Curse words are only vulgar if and when aimed directly at people you are speaking to.
Hmm, because when I looked at my post just after posting, it came up as I had written it, but now its been changed.
