Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsHave you read the Seventh addition to the legacy of J. K. Rowling?

Emperor Shadow

Of course! What reasoned fan hasn't?

I read it and devoured it.

Will! Did you catch the whole "Look at me" part? Well, did you figure out what it meant?

Who said no? 2 people...
I was a little disappointed in the book, but it wasn't the worst thing ever either.

Grand Inquisitor Prognie

Care to explain why you were disappointed?

Well, it didn't up to the bar that the previous books had set. Maybe my expectations were just too high for the book.
That was probably it, I expected way too much from her, while she kept on getting slightly better with each book, my expectations grew faster than she.
All in all, it was a better book than most of the stuff I read in English class, by far.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!? It was absolutely fantastic!!! I was not dissapointed whatsoever!
Is it just me, or was Neville the best charcter in the book?

I felt cheated from the Battle of Hogwarts on.

As far as writing goes, the book was not up to par with some of the other ones. Is it just me or did her editors fail at some points? There were some points where I was confused as to who was being kissed. And there's a part where hermione threw the basilisk fangs into the air threw them around ron and I was like, WHAT? She threw the basilisk fangs at ron? But after reading it you find out that it's her arms around ron and the fangs in the air.
Her description in the beginning of the book was great, the first chapter was well done. But when they kept bringing up Rita Skeeter as a character, she was just described the same way the entire time. Like, that's all you got JK?
All in all I still love the book a lot, and the Pensieve scene was done so well.

I have no complaints whatsoever. I thought it was the best in the series.

It was good, but Order of the Pheonix, and Half Blood Prince where better.

The one fact I reckon people adore it so is the amount of stuff revealed. I could right a duology, the first book hiding all these secrets, and the second spilling them, but that doesn't make the second the better book, nor even a good book. The fact that she was forced to either reveal secrets - some created in this very book - or kill of characters to keep the ball rolling was a little dissapointing.
Even with that we still got pauses where even the character's themselves got bored. I found it hard going, especially the first chapter which served little to no point, and the tent scenes, which were stupid. I know she wanted to convey a long passage of time, but she could have always included mini-adventures as she has artfully done in the previous books.
Where to start with the head count. Man oh man, she really wanted to go out with a bang. More like bang bang bang bang bang. Characters who were seemingly impervious in previous books were dropping like flies, and the Killing Curse, the seemingly "Unavoidable and unblockable" curse, was being dodged by 17 year olds. Hedwig's death was unnessescary and served to do nothing but upset a few youngsters and milk a few awws. Dobby's was plain movie cliche, and Peter's was plain stupid. She leads us up to this great moment where he saves Harry, and its only because he hesitates for a second, and his hand chucks a homicidal wobbly.
Several characters, such as Snape and the rest of the Death Eaters, and any good character during a battle, seemed to assume the same personality, which was nothing short of boring. Snape, the evil guy throughout the series who tried to thwart Potter and his pals in school is seen grovelling to Voldemort which seems so out of place in comparison with the character she built up for the past 6 books.
Ron and Hermione's slowly blooming love was a good side plot, and was one of the pluses of the novel. More plots like this would have helped the book along instead of chapters of "They moved here, couldn't find a Horcrux, moved there, couldn't find a Horcrux. Harry yawned, Ron whined, Hermione cooked dinner.".
The final chapters were pitiful. Absolutely pitiful. Coming into the Battle of Hogwarts I had high hopes, after the brilliant Gringots adventure. The set up for the battle was enthralling, the entire Hogwarts was a fort against the siege that was Voldemort's men. People like Minerva McGonagall, and his other teachers, seen for the first time in all out combat. One word. FLITWICK!! What do we get? Harry, Ron and Hermione flying around like idiots in the room of requirement, flying out, and running away. Little to no mention of the battle other than "Curses were flying around the room. Harry ducked a killing curse and stunned a Death Eater, and flung himself side ways to avoid another killing curse."
Harry's show down with Voldemort was all talk and no action. For the ultimate battle of the series, the long awaited show down, it boiled down to less than a page of talking, and then one simple spell each, with Voldemort not even putting up a struggle. Sure his Horcruxes are gone, but why can't he pull a Harry and dodge? Take Ms Weasley hostage, forcing Harry to do something drastic? No, little old JK wants to wrap this "superb" book up with the final battle happening within the last ten pages of the novel. No mention of the aftermath, of Harry meeting up with Ginny and "getting back together". No. We get a flash forward 19 years to a Fan Fiction-esque scene of Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione taking their Little-Ones-With-Names-Oh-So-Lame to the Platform.
The book was really a rollar-coaster. Not of emotions, of actual events. There was huge pauses with no action or revelations, then a lot all bunched up. Why not space it out? Why not make the book longer, or better yet, shorter, and cut the crap out?
6.5/10 from me. Goblet of Fire remains the best. I loved the riddles and puzzles in it. A true fantasy novel.
As for the writing style, whoever said its better than anything they read in English. It may be more interesting, but she can't write for peanuts. I read a fantastic fantasy series, The Bridei Chronicles. Extremely well written, fast paced, and action filled, each of the three so far have been something like 800 pages, but never a moment of boredom. Exquisite writing style, but she's not as famous as JK. Funny how those things work.

wow, an essay. ((Did you have to do this for school and then posted it here?))
|
Darth Acheron
|
That's not an essay... is it? My essays range from 800-1200 words for school, that's what, 250 words tops? I call that a rant.
|
High Commander Vexen
|
That is a small essay on HPDH I think
|
Darth Acheron
|
You mean as in someone else wrote it and I copied it? I assure you I didn't. I was just writing to counter some of the things people have said, and thought about the other things in the book I didn't like and wrote about them.
|
High Commander Vexen
|
No I mean it is a small essay on the book...that I think is good
|
Darth Acrimonus

I enjoyed this book as much as any other. I think that the popularity of the series has made many come to expect a lot, and it was unavoidable that fans would be let down.
I think the highlights far outnumbered to lowlights. Neville's grandmother is the one that comes to mind ...

Emperor Shadow

Sure, she was a tough old bird. But are you honestly glancing over the weakness of the DARK LORD? He was like... so pathetic.

High Commander Vexen

It would be like if someone of say Praxeum's power was dimished to an adept level

Darth Acheron

I know, and the fact that when it came time for Harry to fight Voldemort all his supporters just died...
|
Darth Acrimonus

| Quote: | | But are you honestly glancing over the weakness of the DARK LORD? He was like... so pathetic. |
True. I tried to make the feeble excuse that the destruction of 5 parts of his soul had diminished his power. But the "final fight" was quite disappointing.
| Quote: | Harry Potter: I'm Harry, so I'm not afraid. Just to prove I'm so tough, I'll call you Tom!
Voldemort: Oh no! He's not afraid, so he must be stronger than I.
Voldemort drops dead. |
|
Emperor Shadow
|
I think he just got whiny. It was like, Harry grew up, and Voldie grew down.
|
High Commander Vexen
|
Yeah it was like
"Expelliarmus"
"Avada Kadevra"
The Elder Wand could not hurt its true owned and then spelled rebounded and at last Voldemort was finnally dead
Very gay
|
Grand Inquisitor Prognie
|
Well, a battle would have been pointless for voldemort as he couldn't hurt anyone and harry's charm worked the same way Lily's did for him. It protected everyone, so voldemort would have found himself with useless spells.
|
High Commander Vexen
|
He could have ran, made another Horcrux or 2, waited 14 more years, and then attacked again....
|
Darth Acheron
|
Impossible. He'd already split his soul too many times. The part that went into Harry was more than he could cope with, at that. Making more would have killed him.
|
Grand Inquisitor Prognie
|
That or made him even far more unstable.
|
Darth Acheron
|
To the point where any one could just destroy a Horcrux and kill him.
|
Supreme Commander Alor
|
Yes, that was very disappointing. Harry was set out to win from the very beginning. It was just way to easy for him to get the horcruxes and destroy them.
Voldemort should have at least been given a chance to win. But instead, the whole "bond" and "wand cores" and Harry tricking Volde into believing that Malfoy was the true owner of the Elder Wand. That was really gay...
|
Grand Inquisitor Prognie
|
He didn't trick him into believing Malfoy was the owner, Malfoy WAS the owner previously before Harry had taken it from him.
|
Supreme Commander Alor
|
but malfoy had not killed Dumbledore, I thought Snape did...
|
Grand Inquisitor Prognie
|
Nope, it wasn't about killing the previous wand-owner, it's about beating them. Grindelwald did not kill the previous owner, he just beat him by stunning him (i beiieve that's what he did) and then took the wand. Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore, thus beating him.
