Metallica Death Magnetic Review

I got an early release for the press and so yeah im the lucky guy. The album will be released on Sept 12. Here I wanna share my opinions.

First of all, dont expect a big hit from this album. Even highly criticized St. Anger was more more catchy and about the speculations like "Metallica going back to their roots" is not realistic at all. Yes, the songs have solos right now but solo does not mean the roots. The old emotional Metallica was the root. The guitar solos that can make you cry was the roots. Death Magnetic is very emotionless. Even in the same song, solos sounds very different that makes the song's structure weak because it could not maintain the theme.

Hardcore sound of St Anger still very exists in the album except Lars Ulrich's St Anger pan drum beats. Kirk Hammett sucks with solos. I have watched Metallica live few weeks ago, and Kirk was missing the notes of even the easiest solos. He needs some help i think. His hands are messed up.

In the album, each song is like 10-minutes long that bores you after some point, especially during solos as i told, it really disturbs your ears. I would also like to add that, in some songs, James sounds like Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day. No joke. As usual, it is very hard to hear the bass guitar. It just follows the rhythm guitar despite Metallica guys' idolization of Rob Trujillo.

Now I will rate the songs one by one with some notes.

Track 1 - That Was Just Your Life- 7.08 - My Rate: 7.5/10

A dark song starts like "The Things that should not be". Then it becomes a riff master. A good choice for album opening. Solos are very good

Track 2 - The End of The Line- 7.52 - My Rate: 6.5/10

An average song. Fast tempo. Has some cool beats

Track 3 - Broken Beat and Scarred- 6.25 - My Rate: 6/10

Intro reminded me Slayer much more than Metallica, sounds like Slayer's South of Heaven. Music is okay, solo is crappy.

Track 4 - The Day That Never Comes- 7.56 - My Rate: 6.5/10

The very first single from the new album. Slow parts are okay but solo is so ear-disturbing and not really blends well with the song. It looks like they have tried to write a new "One" but failed miserably. Rhythm transitions with snare fills are so crappy.

Track 5 - All Nightmare Long - 7.58 - My Rate: 7/10

Starts like Some Kind of Monster but like much more darker version then continues like it. A song that supposed to be in St. Anger. James is breaking riffing records in this song. It is very fast. Chorus sounds like Unforgiven II

Track 6 - Cyanide - 6.39 - My Rate: 7/10

This looks like an experimental song for Metallica. Not sounds like anything, but it rocks. It can be heard on MissionMetallica.com trailer. (Song with ultimate flanger). Has a very limp rhythm at some parts. The only song that you can hear the bass because of only bass, drum partitions lol

Track 7 - The Unforgiven III - 7.46 - My Rate: 6.5/10

Huh? Who put Evanescence to the album? Starts with piano and cello. Do not expect the good old unforgiven notes. It really has nothing with it. I personally believe that they gave that name to song to "sell" the album by using an already known brand. Lacks emotion. Lyrics  are okay and solo worthwhile

Track 8 - The Judas Kiss - 8.00 - My Rate: 8/10

Starts like Creeping Death and continues like something from Reload album. A mostly hardcore song but sounds cool. Possibly one of best songs from the album. Best Solo of the Album.

Chorus kicks *ss. (Chorus can be heard from trailer on MissionMetallica.com)

Lyrics of Chorus:

Bow down
Sell your soul to me
I will set you free
Pacify your demons

Bow down
Surrender unto me
Submit infectiously
Sanctify your demons

Track 9 - Suicide and Redemption - 9.57 - My Rate: 6/10

An instrumental track but dont expect something like Call of Kthulu. The song has some cool riffs and solo parts but some solo really annoying. There is not any theme for the track. It plays sad for a minute than becomes a hardcore part then some country like thing etc. Not liked.

Track 10 - My Apocalypse - 5.01 - My Rate: 7/10

Shortest and last track of the album. Sounds much like Battery from Master of Puppets blended with St Anger sound. Above Average.

LAST WORDS: A mediocre album that is not enough to resurrect Metallica. I now strongly believe that Jason Newsted was the one who makes them Metallica. James' And Lars' song writing days are done.

I can send you few songs by email but make sure that Lars is not tracking you lol

GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I liked the first single though. Makes me mad that it isn't as  good as it is hyped up to be. And While Jason Newsted was good, first four albums= The best ones ever. And the first three were with Cliff Burton. One of the few bassists I can actually respect.

Again, I can send few songs from the album if you wanna have them. There wont be a problem
