Music Recommendation and Discussion

I thought it'd be nice to have a thread for general discussion of music, and also to recommend music to each other.

HOWEVER, I'd like to lay down some ground rules for the discussion. First of all, if you don't like a band, back it up, don't just say "oh, they're crap, they're guitarist sucks". Explain why they're guitarist sucks.

Secondly, if you don't like the band, you can diss the band all you like (provided you back your disses up) but don't diss someone's taste in music, as a moderator I'll consider that a personal attack on another member and will intervene accordingly.

Anyway, I'll kick of the discussions with my music list;

Three Days Grace, Marilyn Manson, Innerpartysystem, Greenday, Scatman John, Sum 41, Eminem, Weezer, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs, People In Planes, Bowling For Soup, Katy Perry, Pendulum, Meat Loaf, Cancer Bats, Rolo Tomassi, Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, Fall Out Boy, William Control, Fair to Midland, Beirut, The Frames, Linkin Park, Slipknot and Rammestein.

Those are the bands and solo artists I mainly listen to. If I was forced to pick a number one, I'd have to go with 3DG as the band and Scatman John as the solo artist.
Supreme Commander Alor

As for your seconds rule, High Mage, you are not a Moderator of this forum, so your powers do not come over this forum. You may point out the attack to either an Admin or Mod of this forum. But that is it.
High Mage Serratus

I simply meant that if rules were broken, I would warn the rule breakers, which if I remember correctly, is a power that all mods possess. Since in earlier days, Crozeus modded me this way in Kroprulu Cantina and early into his return, Aequitas modded Thrax this way in Coruscant Debates, I had always assumed this was a standard power for mods.
Darth Thrax

I agree with Serratus. That is always how I imagined a moderator to be. Someone that kept things under control.
High Prophet Crozeus

Especially considering we haven't seen much of the MODs of this section of the site for some time.

I miss the Duck Sad

That's quite a selection you got there Dean. Rammstein ftw.
Darth Thrax

I really miss the old and original members of the site. I mean, how awesome would it be to have Acrimonus, Ducki, Scourge, Duff and Qel'Vos back?

Anyways, yes, Rammstein ftw. My favorite band would be Coheed and Cambria and my favorite solo artist would have to be The Prize Fighter Inferno.
Major General Celestial

I actually like most of the music you like. The only two that stand-out that I do not like are Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson.

I can't describe really why I don't like Gaga, it's just personal reasons I geuss. However, I loath Marilyn Manson. To me, he is creepy, and I may not be the most christian guy, but I just can't stand when a guy will deliberately curse God.
High Prophet Crozeus

Ducki is kinda here, though she hasn't been seen for a while.

Qel'vos popped back in a little while ago too, then left without a word.
High Mage Serratus

Ironically, Cody, Lady GaGa has a thing for Marilyn Manson and Marilyn Manson is a huge Lady GaGa fan, and they're collaborating on remixes of each other's songs.
High Prophet Crozeus

Marylin Manson blew a snot rocket on the front row of his crowd... and he had swine flu.
Darth Thrax

I'm pretty sure that's not the only disease he has...
Major General Celestial

So very true....
High Mage Serratus

He's still a deeply intelligent and profoundly wise man, whatever his faults. And I think his music is challenging and tackles important issues across generations and subcultures, even if it has to shock a reaction out of people, while mocking itself, as music sometimes needs to do.
Mage Superior Odin

Here are some I like:

Joaquin Rodrigo, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Yehudi Menuhin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonin Leopold Dvorak, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, John Williams (guitarist), John Williams (composer), Yo-Yo Ma, Antonio Vivaldi, Edward Elgar, Maurice Ravel, Sting, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, Dio, Bob Marley, Who, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, PJ Harvey, Imogen Heap, Carla Bruni, Noir Desir, Nick Cave, Athlete, Marcy Playground, Coldplay, Regina Spektor, Travis, Kings of Leon, CC Cowboys, Ceu, Naast, REM, Nirvana, Black Light Burns, Melissa auf der Maur, Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains, Bush, Blink 182, +44, Foo Fighters, White Stripes, Offspring, Panic at the Disco, Amon Amarth, Chimaira, Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, Metallica, In Flames, Hevein, Haggard, Iron Maiden, Korn, Machine Head, Unearth, Pantera, Slayer, Tool, Filter, Farmer Boys, Bjork, Brian Eno, Massive Attack, Wax Poetic, Prodigy, Mira, Portecho, Thievery Corp, Bomfunk MCs, FatBoy Slim, Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan, Jay Jay Johanson, Orgy, Julien-K, Enter Shikari, IAMX, Sneaker Pimps, Chris Corner, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Robbie Williams, Jamiroquai, Xzibit, Ludacris, Jay-Z, Garbage, Oasis, Blind Guardian, Apocalyptica, Animal Alpha, Kristin Hersh, Limp Bizkit, Moby, Pilgrimz, Cranberries, Tori Amos, Wednesday 13 etc. etc. etc.

NOTE: Im sure some names wont make any sense to you, my musical taste is very global Very Happy
Major General Celestial

I like most all music, so I just figured I would throw a few names out of the blue.

Jackyl, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, Baby Bash, Black Eyed Peas, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Creed, Def Leppard, Gary Allan, Godsmack, Guns N' Roses, Hank Williams Jr., Boston, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Matchbox Twenty, Nickleback, Nirvana, Ozzy, Pink Floyd, Shinedown, Staind, Theory of a Deadman, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Union Underground, Warrant, Whitesnake, andThe Who.
High Mage Serratus

Tchaikovsky is probably my favourite romantic composer, along with Grieg. "1812 Overture" would be my favourite Tchaikovsky piece.

I used to listen to a lot of Bob Marley, Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Regina Spektor and Apocalyptica, in fact, I used to listen to a lot of people on your list Odin, but after a while, my music kind of boiled away to a few essentials instead of the hundreds I used to listen to. It's still nice to finger-snap along to some Billy Joel or headbob to Bob Marley once in a while though.
Durza

Tchaikovsky is brilliant.
High Prophet Crozeus

Rachmaninoff had a handspan of 30cm.

Imagine being fist-

No, I won't say it.
Major General Celestial

1. Ew.

2. I don't even know who Tchaikovsky(Copy and pasted) is.
High Prophet Crozeus

Like one of the best composers of all time?

Russian guy?

Nutcracker?
Darth Thrax

Is his name Vladimir?
Durza

Pyotr
Darth Thrax

Haha, I asked that because, in the words of Dakoth, we all know that every russian male is named Vladimir. Razz
Major General Celestial

Or Czechlov.
Mage Superior Odin

In fact, Valdimir is a western Slavic name, does not have a Russian origin at all.
Darth Thrax

Oh, Odin, you and your intelligence... Or google... Razz
Major General Celestial

While we are in a music thread and talking of google, someone should write a song about it.
Mage Superior Odin

Sometimes I get too nerdy, don't I? To be honest, I know tons of unnecessary stuff. I generally have something to say as an answer to any question.
Major General Celestial

I would really recommend sittin' at a bar(Bartender song) by Rehab. I love that song.
Jastin

I really love The Who,Pink Floyd and some others and like have you ever heard behind blue eyes by The Who ftw.
Major General Celestial

Finally, someone else.
Mage Superior Odin

Rammstein lovers, das neue album called Liebe ist für alle da (Love is there for everyone) will be released on 0ct 16
High Mage Serratus

And they're coming to Ireland next year *thumbs up*
Fien'Dur

I freaking love Rammstein! Whoo!
High Prophet Crozeus

Isn't Behind Blue Eyes by Limp Bizkit?

Yay for Rammstein. Their new video is... interesting. Wink
Mage Superior Odin

Shame on you - even you are a Brit.  Mr. Viking
High Prophet Crozeus

Okay there's two versions! Sheesh!
Jastin

Nah behind blue eyes was by The Who, and who here likes zz top?
Mage Superior Odin

High Mage Serratus wrote:

You might be "underage" for the concert so don't get yourself so excited to attend the gig. Live Rammstein is not that "innocent" at all. They were twisted as always but the latest video (if you have watched it uncensored) is seriously off limits. If they will try something "similar", something wicked might happen during shows  Razz
Fien'Dur

And their shows are hardcore, with fire and topless women.  Very Happy
Mage Superior Odin

Fien'Dur wrote:

Funny, obvious that you have no idea at all lol. I can recommend some reality, but better I shut up - there are kids here.
Fien'Dur

What do you mean?...
Lord Aequitas

He means it's much, much worse than topless women.
Mage Superior Odin

Grand Mage Aequitas wrote:

Thank you my favorite Irish.
High Prophet Crozeus

Well, call it worse if you want... Razz
Darth Rachk

Im totally buying the new album, I have a live dvd of there from when they performed at the völker ball in '08, their pyrotechnics are amazing.
Fien'Dur

If by worse you mean completely nude? Or still worse than that?
Mage Superior Odin

Lets change the discussion Very Happy

Have you watched Madonna/Gaga Cat Fight? Its hilarious.
Darth Thrax

If it has Lady GarbGarb, it's either hilarious because it's making fun of her or dumb because her music sucks.
Lord Aequitas

And why does her Music suck?
Darth Thrax

It's just utter garbage. It sounds almost exactly like the bubblegum pop that's been the favorite of oh so many teens this decade.
Lord Aequitas

And just because some people may like this type of music it's crap?

I hate "bubblegum pop" as you call it. But I like Lady GaGa. So what does that mean? That I'm like every other teenager?
Darth Thrax

To me, it is crap. Lil' Wayne, 3oh!3, and Hollywood Undead are just a few other "bands" that have garbage music.

I never said that every teenager liked Lady GarbGarb, I said many of them did. And since I don't really know you, I can't make that judgment call.
Lord Aequitas

I only like one song from 3OH!3 but they are on my iPod none-the-less.

Other artists on my iPod include: Alice Cooper, Metallica, Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Blood on the Dancefloor, Blink 182, Slipknot, Cher, Celine Dion, The Corrs, U2, Rihanna, Elton John, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Collin Raye, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Mika, Dido, Dolly Parton, Kelly Clarkson, etc.

Way more too. I'm pretty eclectic.
Darth Thrax

The name 3oh!3 doesn't make sense in the least.

Coheed and Cambria, Anberlin, Children of Nova, The Prize Fighter Inferno, Shabutie, and RED are my favorite artists. I also rather like Within Temptation.
Lord Aequitas

Yes, becase Anberlin and Shabutie do make sense.
Darth Thrax

Anberlin is the name of the lead singer's daughter-to-be and also because he wanted to visit Berlin.

Shabutie was actually just a random name that the band members came up with with. later on, they decided that it was stupid so they changed it. Coheed and Cambria was born.

They sure make much more sense than a number - two letter word with an exclamation mark behind it - and another number.
Lord Aequitas

I didn't think Anberlin made sense until you told me what it stood for.

So maybe you should go find out what 3OH!3 stands for.
Jastin

What does bubblegum pop mean?Is it just a generic term for the noise that is a mockery of real music that teenagers listen to?
Darth Thrax

I just spent 15 minutes trying to find out what it means and I couldn't find a nothin'. Maybe you'll have better luck than me.
Jastin

Hahaha like I'd waste my time looking up something I really don't care about.I'd rather just sit down and listen to pinkfloyd.
Darth Thrax

Pink Floyd ftw.
Mage Superior Odin

Wow Aequitas, I would never guess you listen to Slipknot
Lord Aequitas

Sometimes when I'm in a pissed mood, Slipknot and Metallica tend to be the bands I listen to.
Mage Superior Odin

I use Machine Head for that  Very Happy .
High Prophet Crozeus

I have mixed feelings about Anberlin.

On the one hand their music is quite good.

On the other hand it's Christian Propaganda.
Supreme Prophet Praxeum

I am quite a fan of Anberlin. My band has covered their song "A Day Late" in concert before, in fact.

My personal taste in music ranges to all genres. 9 out 10 bands we play with are post-hardcore/popcore bands. So, I listen to that more than anything. But I like anything from Molotov Solution to Smiletron.
