Natural law of combat.

I’ve noticed this in every movie and video game that has fighting in it, even Star Wars. it’s the law of battle. The more there are the less of a fight they put up. Look at the Jedi, thousands of them and the Sith only had two, who kicked the most ass, the Sith. In 300, there were 300 Spartans and a million Persians, Spartans beat the hell out of them. And in every Ninja film, the more Ninjas the less you have to worry, now if you run into one ninja then you better get out of there.
High Commander Vexen

LoTR

9 people kill thousands
Dixon-Craat

The Sith didn't kill all the Jedi, the Clone Troopers/newly made Stormtroopers did most of the work.
Serino

Even then, more storm troopers, more deaths. The did kill the Jedi, but the Jedi killed more of them, less Jedi. You see.
Gretious

I agree totally. That seems to happen a lot. That one battle in Lord of the Rings had like 300 guys (moslty kids and elderly people) fight off at least 10,000 orcs and such and they still kicked butt.
Darth Lithium

The space battle around the Death Star II also obeys this law. You've made a very good observation Serino.
Darth Barad-Dur

Not true all the time. In Gettysburg, the Union had 15,000 more men, and they lost less then the fewer confederates.

However, most movies with fighting do follow it. The Alamo, 200 men, kill 600 Mexicans in 30 minutes (both movie and actual history). The 300 Spartans 300 kick the butts of a million. Saints and Soldiers 6 guys take out nearly 40 others, and 1 of them took out 30 of them.
High Commander Vexen

Then after the battle of Thermoply n(sp) when the Greeks united they where still outnumbered but they still won.
Serino

I had a theore . There were less becase there training regiment was more difficalt. That was thru with the Spartans but not in Lord of the Rings. Orcs traing was much more deadly then Rohans. Yet they still won.
Gretious

In Commando, Arnold Swartzenager(sp?) gets on this island and single-handedly takes out like 60 terrorists while dodging bullets and getting shrapnel in his stomach.
Darth Acheron

There's actually a wikipedia article on this, not sure if you've seen it, but yeah, its because movie directors can't actually have fifteen ninjas simultaenously fighting at their best against the hero.

I guess the cheesy explanation is, that whilst one of them was fighting the hero, they couldn't, or they could hurt their ally.
Supreme Commander Alor

Rambo...

thats al that needs to be said...
Serino

I know.
The cheesyness of it all. But there has to be some coolness to it all.

Its called the stormtrooper effect.
Darth Barad-Dur

ANother movie that vers away from the law is Chitty Chitty Bang-Bang. When the people rise up in revolt, they have like three times the men that the fewer soldiers do, and they slaughter them.

And, the Siege of Minas Tirith. Fewer Gondorians, more casualties, especially after the orcs enter the city.
High Commander Vexen

Then you get the undead army

I like the Stormtrooper effect.
Supreme Commander Alor

sounds so cool...
Jak

This is an interesting topic. Something I hadn't really thought of before.

Like in Black Hawk Down, the Delta and the Rangers have less, yet they kinda - in my view - beat the local Militia.
Darth Duff

Its not just in the movies however......

In real life smaller groups of people have overcome the odds to fend off a group supirior in number.... in modern times (ruling out mythological events that have been transformed over time)

You have the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) At the beginning of WW1, they fought against the attacking Germans and managed to defend themselves even though the odds were clearly against them.

Other instances include the German Operation Greif during the second world war,

SAS missions all over the world, including in the Falklands conflict

Im sure there are more but for once some of what we see in the movies are true.....

My dad's friend is in the SAS. Very Happy I'm gonna join - maybe - when I'm older.

In REAL LIFE, I guess the training and stuff comes true.
Darth Duff

I thought that the SAS were secretive and officers only supposed to reveal that they were a part of it once decommissioned (although still frowned upon) or once they were dead.... or maybe that is just the British version...

Also good luck on becoming a member, i know it is an arduous ordeal with a very low pass rate so you will probably need it Laughing
Jak

The SAS stands for Special Air Service, and I live in NZ. I watched a Documentary or two, about getting in, the training and stuff, and thought to myself that in the next 10 or so years, I'll be all good for it. Right now I'm pretty fit and well.

Confused Never heard of that before. My dad was in the Air Force for 20 years, made scopes for a team going over to Afganistan, and one of his best friends went there, and was in the SAS. That's how I know. Don't know about not telling people though. But I guess I wasn't an outsider of anything, so...

Yeah, lol.

when you say it like that, you make it seem like its for the idiots who couldn't get into the real air force...

Ah thats were we got our wires tangled then, i was refering to the British SAS, there are subtle differences between the two.... although the NZ SAS are desinged on the Britsh version.....

I thought I said Special Air Service? ...

Anyways, it's not, even though it might sound like it. Eh, google NZSAS or whatever on Google, then you'll see it's not for idiots. Wink

The reason why less guys do more kills is the fact that they are defending. Very rarely are they attacking. Very basic military logic.
