Darth Suspiria stood in the training ground waiting for the arrival of her apprentice Phoenix. He seemed like a young man eager to learn and become a productive part of the Empire.
She had many assignments in mind for him and hoped that he would do well. Training good people for the Empire was important.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix finally arrived to the training grounds, for the past few days he was checked by the Sith, understandable, considering his past with the Jedi order. A slim figure clad in black robes caught his eye, no doubt his tutor already awaited. Phoenix approached the sith and bowed - "Milady, I have arrived."
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria nodded at Phoenix. She approved of his politeness. "Thank you Darth Phoenix. One of my primary considerations is that I like people to have a good understanding of things. I would therefore like to know from you the following."
1. What in the Sith code do you believe is important.
2. What would you change if you could, and what would you change it to.
3. Why do you believe that your path to success lies with the Sith and the Empire.
4. What do you believe that your strengths as a Sith will be and why.
5. What would you like to focus upon learning.
"Take your time it is a lot. I prefer you think about things than rush."
Darth Mortis
Phoenix raised his eyebrow slightly, the question was a tricky one. "The entire Sith Code is important, it establish the core principles of the Order. But ifI am to choose, I believe the most important lines are the first, the second and the penultimate one.'Peace is a lie, there is only passion' - this line challenges the Jedi's foolish belief that peace is a basis upon wich the Galaxy is built. This is a lie. Our lives, the lives of every being in the Universe is a cycle of unending struggle. The weak yield to the strong, so it was, so it is and so it shall be. And so it should be, for without struggle there can be no gain, the living being stops in it's evolution and therefore stagnates and dies in time. 'Through passion, I gain strength' - our emotions are what makes us alive, they give us strength, purpose, the will to live. Denying them means denying our own nature. OF course that does not mean that we should debase ourselves to rudimentary beings, guided only by their desires and enslaved by them. No, a true sith knows when to brush emotions aside and when to embrace them. 'Through victory my chains are broken' - alas, many misinterpret this line and believe it to be their excuse to do whatever they want. This is false, of course. The true meaning of this line is that one should seek to free himself in order to reach perfection, to fulfil his potential. It drives us ever onward, forces us to evolve" - he began with a wry smile - "For those who seek perfection there can be no rest on this side of the grave. And thus the true sith constantly improve themselves. And this everlasting evolution is what makes the Sith superior, and therefore rightful rulers of the Galaxy."
For a brief moment Phoenix stopped, carefully considering his words. In truth he thought about this subject for the last few days and he came to a conclusion which he voiced now - "I believe the Code itself should be left unchanged, although all apprentices should be tested intensively until they truly understand the meaning of the Code. The only weakness I see in the Sith Order is the lack of loyalty and petty rivalry among even the high ranking members of the Order. I think it is the misinterpretation of the Code that causes so many sith to vie for even smallest shreds of power. They desire power for power's sake and thus they become slaves of the very power they tried to control. And that rivalry weakens the Sith as a whole. Of course as I already said without struggle life loses it's meaning and the Sith must always test themselves against the Jedi, against any enemy, even their own brethren. And yet such fighting should not take place when the Order is threatened by an outside enemy."
Phoenix glanced at his Master warily before continuing his monologue. "I have no illusions, the Order is not perfect, there are foolish brutes who are encased in the hollow shells of their pathetic minds and ruled by primitive instincts, there are those who value personal gain above their loyalty, but also there are truly remarkable individuals, those who seek to understand the ways of the Force, to expand their knowledge and thus they rise above the rest of the Galaxy, above the stagnant jedi order and above their own limits. This is what I wish for myself - to challenge my own limits, to improve myself, and only the Sith can help me. In return I offer my loyalty, I am sure the Empire needs loyal followers. To be more materialistic - I can be an assassin. My previous experience taught me how to remain unseen and stalk your prey. Striking from the shadows I will deliver the Emperor's wrath to any foe wherever they hide. As for the last part of you question, milady, I would prefer comprehensive training. But if I must choose then I would prefer to focus on stealth and combat."
After he finished his speech Phoenix took a deep breath and slightly bowed his head. "What I just told you are my beliefs, nothing more, Lady Adriel. Correct me if I am wrong."
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria looked thoughtfully at the young man who stood before her breathing a bit hard from speaking so long. She had been right, he had a bright future ahead if he continued on his path. His response had been complete, well thought out and confidant. Yet not overly confidant or arrogant. Very good.
"I am very pleased with your response. It shows that you think, have an understanding of the code, and its place in your development. It is true that sometimes we Sith scramble too much for the scraps of power. Any power. To gain and direct power should be the goal. Power must also be used wisely, lest we fall to its seduction. Power should be our ladder to success. The only thing I would correct, is that I am Darth Suspiria not Lady Adriel. I would like to achieve that one day, but that day is still far off in the future."
"Another part of development is the ability of self-analysis. To be confidant is good. We grow stronger by seeing our flaws and correcting them. I would now ask you the following."
1. What weaknesses do you believe that you have intellectually. (subjects you may need to study, etc.
2. What skills do you need to improve. (Lightsaber, weapons training)
3. What intellectual pursuits and skills would you like to study and learn.
4. What ones do you believe that you have an acquity for.
"Once I learn these things, I will make up 'lessons' knowledge-based and practical for you to participate in. I am already thinking that we will go together for a mission on a planet fairly soon. I will expect a great deal of you."
Darth Mortis
"Alas, I am not very familiar with the history of the Sith. The jedi masters never allowed their padawans to access academy's archives without stirct supervision, so my knowledge is hardly beyond common. But I believe a few months of intense study in the archives would correct that. Amusing, I hardly imagine myself as a scholar spending restless nights over piles of manuscripts" - Phoenix said and chuckled quietly. Judging from her reaction, Mistress Suspiria was pleased. Excellent, a good first impression means a lot. Phoenix remembered that lesson from his childhood. "As for my combat skills, as all padawans I received rudimentary training in Forms I-V, but my former master insisted that I learn Niman and after this, the Jar'Kai style. I prefer to use two sabers, yet I also wish to learn Makashi. I saw it in action, and I was impressed. Again, I have basic knowledge of that style but nothing less than mastery would satisfy me. In the intellectual sphere I would be very grateful if you taught me about Imperial politics, both the open and... shall I say the 'darker side' of it. Since I thought about joining the Inquisition this knowldege could be handy. As I already said I have affinity for stealth and covert operations. I move quietly and for the most part unseen and I can be *very* patient."
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria listened carefully to what her apprentice was saying to her. "The Royal Guard are where all the top assassins of the Empire are trained. You may wish to read all that you can of the Royal Guard and eventually if that is your choice, post an application there. Or stealth is also taught at the Inquisitorious. You will eventually have to decide which of those paths to take."
"As for the politics of the Empire, only the superficial happens on the surface. Almost all the important things happen 'behind the scenes.' That is true of all political systems. I would suggest that you start by reading (OOC: character profile section) and read about the Emperor and then Darth Acheron. You will begin to understand. We will begin our training in Makashi tomorrow. That was the original form which I learned and remains my primary form."

[OOC: Thank you, I'll do my best ]
"I will do as you say, milady" - Phoenix said bowing his head. "Unless you require anything else I will proceed to the archives."
Darth Suspiria
[You are welcome. I know you will do your best. ]
"You may proceed to the Archives my apprentice." Darth Suspiria nodded at Phoenix. He will do well.
She left to prepare a Makashi lesson for the following day.
Darth Mortis
The next day Phoenix returned to the training grounds. He spent entire night in the archives studying history of the Eternal Empire. Quite predictably the ammount of information was too great to comprehend in such a small time. But the archive keeper was kind enough to share some rumors. All this made Phoenix rethink his initial decision concrening the Order he wished to join, he still has some time to study all possible variants and pick the one that suits him best. Making considerable efforts to surpress yawning Phoenix looked around, hoping to see his tutoress.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria had been quietly watching her apprentice. He seemed tired and she smiled to herself. He would probably be a lot more tired before his training was over. She stepped out of her place of seclusion and walked over to him.
"So my apprentice, what did you learn at the archives? Did the archivist regale you with rumors of the Empire? That is his way. The question is, can you believe him. Or is he leading you astray for his own purposes? Such is the politics of the Empire both above and below the waters. Betrayal is ever present. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Emperor rewards the loyal. Trust no one. Question all that is said to you. Create your own opportunities, do not wait for others to create them. Remember that in order to succeed the others that you meet will step on you. Step first. Practice patience. Learn all you can of the wisdom of the Empire. Study your rivals. Choose your allies wisely. Sith do not have friends, but allies are necessary. Choose those who are as strong in talents and knowledge as yourself. The weak are an anchor to the ambitions of the strong. Act carefully, not precipitously. Do you have any comments or questions?
Darth Suspiria drew her lightsaber. Snap-hiss sounded in the training ground as it ignited, the lavender light shining brilliantly. "Now, let us begin with Makashi training. Ignite your lightsaber. This is how a Makashi duelist begins, showing respect for his opponent."
Darth Suspiria raised the blade vertically before her face and then with a flourish created an X in the air. The blade ended pointing down at the floor. She waited now for Phoenix's response. Her eyes gleamed. She had just given him a great deal to consider.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix bowed - "Yes, milady. I understand - choose your alliances well, trust no one... So be it." He was very surprised that Suspiria knew about the archivist, but perhaps that was to be expected. Phoenix shrugged off the initial astonishment and ignited one of his lightsabers, illuminating his surroundings with bright blue light. The younger sith returned the salute and prepared for duel. Phoenix stood with his feet shoulder width apart, turning his side to his opponent and pointing the blade downwards. "I shall pay heed to your wisdom and carefully weigh my decisions before acting. Be assured, milady, I shall not fail you" - he said slightly raising the lightsaber. The duel was about to begin, and Phoenix made an eye contact with his tutoress, his old weapons master told him that eyes betray the opponent's movements, and that was true for the most part. Phoenix tightened his grip on the hilt and braced himself.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria looked at her young apprentice. He had saluted properly and was now in position to begin dueling. Today was mostly practice, not really a duel.
Suspiria also took her stance blade pointing downward and then began to move. She moved in a circular motion, eye on her apprentice, staring straight back at him.
"Makashi attacks are meant to be very swift and accurate. This allows the combatant to reserve as much energy as possible. Attacks do not require much power, the goal is accuracy. The object is to be as fluid as possible. En garde!" she cried and began to riposte engaging his lightsaber and beginning the practice. Sparks flew as the two lightsabers struck one another.
Darth Mortis
"That much is known to me. Maintaining precise distance from one's opponent is also vital. Balance is everything when using Form II" - Phoenix replied and made a step backwards. With swift motions the younger sith parried his Mistress's attacks and answered with counterthrusts of his own. "I learned the theory, but to my great regret, never had proper practice" - Phoenix spoke and lunged at Suspiria.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria anticipated Phoenix's lunge and side stepped out of the way. This was supposed to be training, not a duel as of yet and she used a vertical attack. Swiftly she put the lightsaber above her head and sliced downward. The blade hit Phoenix's lightsaber with deadly accuracy.
Purple and blue the two blades collided. The colors merged, casting a dark shroud of black light upon the floor. Phoenix's lightsaber broke, and the sapphire glow was extinguished. The hilt shards sparkled as they fell to the floor, glistening. The blue crystal rolled out, came to a standstill, glowing faintly.
Darth Suspiria regarded Phoenix steadily. "This my young apprentice is why few lunges are ever used in Makashi. It is the form of swift parries, feints and conservation of energy. A real opponent in a real battle would have cut off your head. We will create a new lightsaber together. This crystal is both beautiful and powerful. When next it tunes the weapon you wield protect it better."
"Please return to the archives, look up lightsaber creation and give me a full and complete explanation of how it is done. Choose which type of hilt and blade style you desire. For today, thus endeth the lesson."
Darth Mortis
Phoenix glanced at the broken hilt of his saber, strangely enough - he felt no regret for the loss of that weapon. It was one of the few things that tied him to the jedi order, and that part of Phoenix's life was now in the past. "Yes, milady. I shall do as you command" - he said and used the Force to pull his crystal to his hand. With that he turned to leave the training grounds.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria nodded at Phoenix as he drew his crystal to his hand with force pull. "You have done well Phoenix. If you continue to your efforts will reap great rewards, in power gained and ambition rewarded. Choose whatlightsaber and style suits you best."
Darth Mortis
This time Phoenix spent in the archives no more than half a day, due to his earlier training he already knew enough to create the lightsaber. What the archivist has shown him was already known to the young sith or it didn't interest him, double-bladed lightsabers simply were not his style. So Phoenix mainly focused on the information concerning synthetic crystals, he decided to make both lightsaber anew, and he needed a crystal for the second blade. The remaining lightsaber still tied him to the jedi, that was unacceptable. It is a useful tool for now, but once it can be replaced, it shall be destroyed.
For five minutes Phoenix wandered around the grounds, occasionaly encountering apprentices training with their masters or on their own. Since there is nothing better to do he stopped to observe a pair of students who were dueling. But after several minutes even this became boring, Phoenix took the crystal from his pocket and brought it closer to his face. It was a simple Mephite crystal, nothing special about it. The crystal glittered as beams of the setting sun reflected from it's polished surface. "Soon, old friend. Soon you will have a new purpose... Curses! I am speaking to a crystal, hope no one noticed that" - Phoenix muttered and looked around.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria received a bit of intelligence as she studied in the library. Her apprentice Phoenix was walking around appearing forlorn. That just would not do. Thrifty and wise use of one's time was important to fulfilling goals and ambitions. She reached out to him with a force communication.
Phoenix, report to the lightsaber construction area please. We will begin immediately. Start to heat the metal to form the hilt. I will join you shortly. She could sense his surprise at this communication method.
Sighing she closed her book. Carefully rerolling the scroll she had been scrutinizing she returned it to its enameled case and handed it to the archivist. He nodded at her. This was a ritual they had repeated numerous times. She was often here. She nodded back at him.
"As always, I thank you for your assistance." Then she left to go and meet Phoenix.
Darth Mortis
Without questions Phoenix made haste to the construction area. He had no time to lose. Typically the ritual of lightsaber contruction would take from two weeks to a month, but not now. Time was of the essence and Phoenix intended to create his new weapon as soon as possible, probably his tutoress will be displeased with the rush.
The young sith literally stormed into the chamber, causing several heads to turn in his direction. Phoenix pretended that he didn't notice that and looked around. The chamber appeared to be a workshop, numerous workbenches were placed in long rows, each of them contained a set of tools necessary for work with the lightsaber. Servitor-droids passed among the workbenches, always busy with something, mainly fetching components for the apprentices (or sometimes even minions and masters) or removing the refuse. At this time of day the chamber was almost empty, excluding five stangely-looking individuals who were now too consumed in their work to pay attention to anyting else.
Phoenix finally noticed the only human-attendant and approached him. "Good evening, sir" - he greeted the man - "I am sure you know why an apprentice like me would come here, so you know what I will need - a focusing lens, diatum power cell, power field conductor... Ah well, I am sure you know all the components. Just note that I will need enoguh of them to construct two lightsabers." The attendant nodded and turned around to leave but Phoenix stopped him - "Where can I star working on the hilt?" Without a word the attendant pointed towards the far end of the chamber. The light shooting through the doorway indicated that the forge is there. Phoenix nodded in gratitude and made haste to the forge.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria entered the workshop where lightsabers and other weaponry were created and assembled. It is a busy place she told herself. As she looked around she spotted five sentient beings wearing cloaks, their faces hidden. She gazed with interest for a moment, then went to the forge area. Her apprentice Phoenix was there. She nodded at him. He was creating a lightsaber hilt, hammering it on the forge.
"Do not rush, you want your new lightsaber to be completed rightly. An improperly created lightsaber does not perform well for its master. They can mean the difference between life and death in a battle. As my Master Darth Malice gave to me a choice of crystals to use for focusing so I do the same for you. I know you require two lightsabers. You have the crystal for one. You may choose a crystal from the bag. Think about your attributes. Choose the crystal that will complement them, whose power can join with yours to meld a more formidable warrior."
She handed him a black velvet bag, with silken cords carefully tied.
Darth Mortis
With a bow Phoenix took the bag. "You honour me, milady" - he said and carefully untied the cords. Inside he found almost a dozen crystals of different colouring, all glittered and reflected the firelight coming from the forge. For several moment Phoenix examined them, he could feel the faint power the crystals emanated. Finally the ruby-colored crystal caught Phoenix's eye. He used the force to raise the gem and bring it closer to his face. "Beautiful..." - the sith whispered and pulled the crystal to his hand. After tying the cords as they were Phoenix bowed again and returned the bag back to Darth Suspiria.
"I believe this one will be perfect" - he said and turned back to the forge. Already several parts of the hilt were ready, of course these were simple templates that were far from finished. Still they needed to be worked up, put together and adorned. Still a certain pattern was already clear - both lightsabers would be slightly curved. Phoenix wiped his forehead with the sleeve of his robes and continued the work.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria watched the young man so hard at work. It was hot in the forging area and sweat poured down his face. She wiped hers with a hankerchief and continued to observe. He was doing a fine job. The red crystal had been an excellent choice. It had been synthetically created by a Sith, and the wielder of the lightsaber it tuned would have a powerful weapon in their grasp.
"Do not rush. I will set up a table and get the focusing equipment properly aligned. Your choice of crystal was excellent." She tucked the bag with the rest of the crystals away and went into the assembly area.
The strange group of beings was still there. The room was fairly full. Some of those engaged in weaponswork nodded at her and she nodded back. Darth Suspiria set up the equipment and aligned it. Phoenix was still bent diligently over the forge. She took out one last surprise.
Two clear jewels that came from the planet of Don 1 where they had been mined deep underground. They would change color when embedded in the hilt and become the color of the lightsaber tuning crystal. They were highly prized and the prisms of light they created were beautiful. She set them beside the focusing equipment and waited.
Darth Mortis
Finally after hours of work Phoenix was satisfied with the result. Finished parts of the hilt floated before him, Phoenix put them together in turn, all seemed to fit perfectly. Now he only had to weld them and the casing will be ready. The young sith gathered everything and made way to the assembly chamber.
Passing along the rows Phoenix looked around with interest, many more sith came here while he was forging the hilt. "Don't they ever sleep" - he muttered and continued his way. Speaking if which, after the work is done he could use a good nap. Phoenix already saw his tutoress awaiting near one of the workbenches, he made haste there. The younger sith nodded and placed hilt parts on the table top. It seemed all necessary tools were in place, the attendant already brought other components. Phoenix appraised each one of them, this will definetely do. Finally the jewels caught his eye. Phoenix raised his eyebrow in disbelief. "Milady?" - he said quietly, and then bowed his head - "Thank you." Phoenix placed the jewels in his pouch next to other crystals, he still needed to assemble the hilts before setting the crystals.
Now came the hardest part of assembly, all components needed to be tuned and carefully assembled. Phoenix took the main part of lightsaber hilt, it consisted of two slightly curved bands of black metal, it's form resembled that of nexu's fang. Phoenix carefully placed the power cell and began to adjust it. While working he opened himself fully to the Force, allowing it's energy to flow freely through him. "Without Darkness, there can be no Light" - he began to recite one of the litanies. When the power cell was fixed Phoenix placed the crystal mount and the energy gate. "We have Purpose" - he adjusted the newly placed components. "Without Lie, there can be no Truth.
We have Purpose" - Phoenix separated the hilt in half so it would be easier to work with other components. "Without War, there can be no Victory. We have Purpose" - the young sith continued to work at the first part of the hilt. "Without Death, there can be no Sacrifice. We have Purpose" - Phoenix slightly readjusted the crystal energy chamber making sure that it is aligned perfectly. "Without Hope, there can be no Future. We have Purpose" - Phoenix fixed the silver-coloured pommel to the grip. "Without Loyalty, there can be no Order. We have Purpose" - with the help of arc torch he fixed the grip and the pommel together. "Without the Force, there is nothing... And we would have no Purpose" - Phoenix used the Force to carefully fuse the two parts together, leaving no sign of the weld that was just there. Phoenix smiled, he was satisfied with the work for now, but there was still much more to do.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria watched the young man's face as he saw the clear crystals. His pleasure was apparent and she was glad. His skill at this was fairly advanced for an apprentice and she observed with interest. He had once been trained by the Jedi, they learned this knowledge at a young age.
She bent over beside him and said, "Be certain that the hilt casing and components are aligned properly. Otherwise the power loop will not properly be fed back into the internal power cell. You want the loop to be perfectly shaped like a blade. You also want the length to be right for you. A lightsaber as a traditional sword is not effective if it is too big for you to wield properly. The blade should be no longer than from your shoulder to your hand. The blade should merge and flow with your motion, an extension of yourself. The lightsaber is part of you, not separate from you. When holding it, you should regard it as another appendage, not a separate tool."
As Phoenix reached out using the force to aid and augment his construction, she reached out with him with the Force. She chanted "The crystal is the heart of the blade, the heart of the blade." She sent the flow of power towards both her apprentice and the lighsaber willing strength to its components, to the one who would wield it.
"Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through Power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me."
Then she added some lines.
"May the Force free you.
Power begets power.
I join your power with mine.
I give you strength.
May this weapon bring you victory.
Without strife your victory has no meaning.
Without strife you do not advance.
Without strife there is only stagnation.
May your passion propel you forward
To the fulfillment of your ambitions."
She allowed the power to flow unchecked for a bit longer then drew back. Darth Suspiria nodded at Phoenix. The hilt shone, darkside power filled its recesses. Her violet eyes glinted darkly. This would be a fell weapon. Of that she was certain.
Darth Mortis
The sun shone brightly in the skies of Kuat when Phoenix finally completed the construction of his lightsaber. After fixing the bladeguard and striking a set of sith runes on the hilt Phoenix at last completed the hilt. Carefully he placed the focusing crystal and the clear jewel, taking some time to adjust them. At last he fastened the two parts of the hilt. For a moment Phoenix looked at the newly constructed lightsaber, it took almost a day of work but it was well worth it. "Thank you" - he said to Darth Suspiria, for without her help the construction would take much more time. A blade of pure bright blue energy pierced the air, Phoenix swung his weapon, the balance was perfect. Once again the blade cut through air, nearly decapitating a passing droid. It was highly doubtful that anyone would approve damaging the state property, so Phoenix quickly extinguished the lightsaber. "I appologise, milady" - he said with a wry smile. Still the second lightsaber had to be assembled as well. Phoenix sighed and turned back to the workbench.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria was pleased with the result of her apprentice's first lightsaber. The coloring was beautiful and it was obvious the tuning had come out well. She hid a smile as he nearly decapitated a droid. His face had that small boy look of being caught in the cookie jar on it.
Next would come the construction of the second lightsaber. She pointed at the crystal, its deep ruby hue almost pulsing as it lay on the table. She pointed at it.
"This is a Synth crystal manufactured by a Sith Lord. It will create what is called a 'bloodshine blade'. It will serve you well, but they are more unstable than natural crystalline structures. It will break easier, which is a disadvantage. They are however known for their power. The owner of a blade focused with this stone will be strong in battle. In order to keep the stone from breaking, the owner must learn to fight with finesse. We will practice together again after you are done. There is a chamber available here to test the viability of the newly created lightsaber. After completion, we will go there and commence to test your creations."
Darth Mortis
"As you wish" - Phoenix nodded and began assembling the second hilt.
"There is no peace, there is anger.
There is no fear, there is power.
There is no death, there is immortality.
There is no weakness, there is the Dark Side."
Phoenix continued to recite litanies and sith teachings while working with his second weapon. Two hilts were very similar, almost indistinguishable from one another, only the runes were different. Hours passed and night descended upon Kuat once again. Phoenix shrugged off sleepiness, his work was too important. And he had to be even more careful tahn before when working with the synth crystal. Finally as the last rune was carved on the hilt Phoenix activated the newly assembled saber, illuminating his face with blood red light. This one was also balanced perfectly. Phoenix sighed with relief and turned to his tutoress. "All done, milady. Once again, thank you for your help" - he said and nodded with gratitude.
Darth Suspiria
"You are welcome Phoenix. I do for you, what my Master did for me. It is only right for a Sith to have a weapon he or she is comfortable with."
The glow of the blade with the synth crystal reminded her of a Hunter's Moon, before the coming of dawn. Something about it almost vibrated with power and malice the true weapon of a Sith. They would test them in the morning, it was very late. Usually a blade took longer to create, but his diligence and sense of purpose impressed her. He had some previous experience at this as well. It boded well for his new acquisitions' success.
"We will test them here in the chamber in the morning. It is too late now for us to properly do so. Both of us are tired. Meet me back here in six hours. Good night."
Darth Suspiria turned and left the building. It was empty except for her and Phoenix. They had worked all day and night. Time to get some sleep.
Darth Mortis
"Good night, Mistress" - Phoenix nodded and left the building as well. On the way to apprentices' dormitory he stopped to admire the scenery of Kuat City. Myriads of lights glittered on the horizon, outshining even the stars. Although nothing could be better than the night sky from Phoenix's point of view, he had to admit that there was a certain beauty here. For several minutes the young sith reveled in the fresh breeze. He decided to explore the city as soon as he has a chance. Phoenix turned away from the view and continued his way.
The next day Phoenix arrived back to the lightsaber construction area exactly in time. A good nap, as brief as it was, still did him good. The sith looked around and made way deeper into the chamber, searching for his tutoress.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria had slept only briefly. It was all she had needed. She would sleep more when night returned. She breakfasted and headed over to the lightsaber construction workshop. She waited in the chamber for her apprentice. Phoenix arrived looking tired but exhilarated. She nodded, pleased with his punctuality after so long a day.
Darth Suspiria ignited her lightsaber the familiar click...hiss as always bringing a thrill to her heart. She bowed to her apprentice as was appropriate, even in a training chamber. Suspiria did like the decorum of the traditions. She flowed into Teras Kasi her blade raised and pointed at Phoenix.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix ignited his own saber and raised it in salute. "So what are we learning today? Do we continued Makashi lessons or is this a smiple test of my new weapons?" - he inquired circling around Suspiria, holding his saber in defensive position.
Darth Suspiria
"This is merely a test of the new weapons. We will go over to the training ground for the Makashi lesson. Others will be arriving and want to use this place as well. It was not meant for combat."
She brought her lightsaber forward and parried his several times, testing the blade's strength. It seemed well aligned.
"Do you feel an affinity with the lightsaber Phoenix? As though it is just a part of your arm. Oneness with the blade."
Darth Mortis
"I do, milady" - Phoenix replied and ignited the second lightsaber. Three blades locked, sending sparks in every direction. "Looks strong enough to me" - he said once again striking Suspiria's blade. "You said we will go on a mission soon. Do you have anything particular in mind?"
Darth Suspiria
"Yes, Phoenix. Soon we will go on a mission together. We will go to a hostile world to do battle against fell creatures and nature's fury. Your ability to survive will be tested. I will duel with you, and then you will duel with another apprentice or a master if there is not an apprentice available. If you pass all the tests I will request promotion for you. Does that sound reasonable?"
She pulled her blade free. "I have also made a request of the Empire for a temple on Mygeeto. I may ask you to come with me to begin its construction. This is something I am untried at, so it may be we both shall learn a new subject of interest.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix's lips twisted in a smirk, fighting ferocious predators was something he already experienced in the past. "Not that I don't want to be promoted, but isn't that a little too quick?" - he inquired and extinguished his sabers. "As for the temple, I will gladly accompany you, milady. That is if you can tolerate my company for a little longer" - Phoenix said raising his eyebrow slightly.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria looked sternly and steadily at the young man. "I most certainly can stand your company Phoenix. As a matter of fact I am enjoying having you as an apprentice. You came with some experience already in hand. Your skill at constructing the lightsabers is a sign of that."
She sighed. "I would not ask for you to be promoted until I felt you ready. But neither will I hold you back over an artificial time constraint if you are. Do not believe that the trials on the planet will be easy. They will not be."
She walked towards the door and motioned for him to follow.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix's smirk became even more self-satisfied. He didn't want to appear arrogant so he quickly surpressed his emotions and made haste out of the chamber. "You flatter me, milady. But I assure you, I will pass the any trials you deem necessary. By the way what planet are we talking about here?" - the apprentice asked as soon as he caught up with Suspiria.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria looked at Phoenix with amusement. For all his self-assurance, under the surface was still a sense of insecurity. A truly confident individual would not have cared which planet.
"I am considering several. Korriban is one. The ancient ruins are formidable and my understanding is that Sith zombies have been seen wandering as of late. The catacombs have claimed many an apprentice over the years. But it is a place where apprentices are usually sent. I am thinking of something new and fresh. Like a world with giant flying reptiles and such where we would be at a disadvantage. Are you up to such a formidable place? I relish such situations, but some do not. A true Sith requires a good challenge. There is no passion in an easy victory. Nor glory. What say you?"
Darth Mortis
"Oh great, let's fight big hungry nasty beasts is it? Count me in" - Phoenix chuckled. Sith and soldiers alike bustled about, Phoenix observed them with a slight smile. "This a really busy place is it not? I am a little unaccustomed to the crowds..." - he said, hoping to change subject to something more casual. He prefered not to think about giant flying reptiles until he faced them.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria sensed Phoenix's discomfort regarding giant flying reptiles. One must face their fears. She would search for such a reptile for him to do battle against.
"Yes this is a busy place. It is always hectic, and full of people. Many come from other places and are here for the shipyards. You should explore the city. It has nice places to eat and gamble if you enjoy such pursuits. I used to go to a stone bridge a great deal of the time to think. I spend many hours at the library. Come, let us go to the training grounds and practice Makashi."
Darth Mortis
"Of course" - Phoenix nodded and doubled his pace. The young sith followed Suspiria constantly glancing around with interest, many apprentices also hurried to the training grounds so it would be impossible to get lost, one would just have to follow the crowd. "I do hope there are other places of entertainment except gambling. Maybe an opera house?" - Phoenix asked as they entered the grounds. With a swift motion he ignited one of his sabers and brandished the blade in a traditional salute, standing motionlessly and awaiting for responce.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria flowed into a traditional Makashi salute, her arduous practice schedule aiding her in creating a seamlessness about her movements.
She moved immediately from the flourish position to a feinting maneuever then deployed a fleche manuever blade pointed like an arrow moving directly for her apprentice's chest.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix tried to keep his distance, carefully watching Suspiria's every move. He wasn't entirely ready for the fleche move, still the young sith's reflexes helped him this time. Phoenix made a quick step backwards, simultaniously twirling his lightsaber so it hit his tutoress's blade, upseting it's trajectory. The purple blade singed his tunic but did little more damage. Using the moment Phoenix sent a Force wave to throw his opponent out of balance and almost immediately he thrusted aiming at Suspiria's side.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria felt the force wave hit her and then saw the lightsaber slashing at her side. The force wave however threw her out of the saber's reach. She immediately leapt to her feet and counter-attacked, advance-lunging and then slashing at his arm.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix sidestepped and parried the slash. Now he was retreating step by step, doing his best to counter Suspiria's attacks. Phoenix knew he had no chance to compete with her speed and if he continued to retreat the duel wasn't going to end well for him. When the opportunity arose the apprentice charged forward, swinging his saber so it came into lock with his master's blade. Phoenix pressured Suspiria's weapon, pushing it back at her. A scarcely perceptible smile appeared on his face, even though this was a simple sparring, Phoenix was quite enjoying himself.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria's eyes twinkled as Phoenix locked blades with her. She appelled, startling him which derobed the saber lock. She then feinted and engaged in a coupe, taking the right of way. She flicked, her lightsaber heading towards his shoulder.
Darth Mortis
Sharp pain pierced Phoenix's shoulder and he drew back. For a moment he glanced at the wound, the cut wasn't too deep but it was enough to considerably reduce the speed with which he could wield lightsaber. Phoenix winced and took his weapon in the left hand. Now he acted much more carefully, parrying Suspiria's attacks and occasionaly counter-attacked. Dull pain around his shoulder was now nothing more than minor inconvenience and Phoenix once again assumed the offensive. He deployed a feint attack and after this slashed his saber aiming at his master's right leg.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria was unable to get out of the way of Phoenix's slash at her leg. She felt the pain blossom in her calf and grimaced with chagrin. She hobbled a bit, retreating back as he took the offensive. Then she shook off the blow and went back on the attack.
Suspiria fleched, striking at Phoenix's swordarm as the momentum carried her past him, almost in a sliding motion. Pointed like an arrow she turned in the skid, preparing to come right back in his direction.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix jerked away his hand barely in time to evade his master's saber. Quickly he made an about-turn to face his opponent and when Suspiria attacked once again he sidestepped, simultaniously parrying the incoming attack and allowing Suspiria to slide past him. With his rught hand Phoenix sent a Force wave at her and prepared to charge.
Darth Suspiria
The force wave flowed in her direction and she felt it coming. Darth Suspiria hastily threw up a force shield and the wave crashed against it. As soon as the wave subsided, Phoenix was charging.
She moved out of his way and counter attacked directly at him. She used an envelopement manuever which caused the blades to go in a circular movement. She then flicked him with a quick slash aimed directly at his sword hand.
Darth Mortis
A flash of pain almost made Phoenix drop his weapon, this time the wound was even deeper then the first one, every movement made with his left hand came with great effort and sharp pain. Only be miracle Phoenix was able to parry several more of Suspiria's attacks, but he knew this cannot continue for much longer. It was all or nothing, Phoenix pushed away his opponent with a Force way and again took his weapon in the right hand, the wound on his shoulder still decreased his effectivness, so Phoenix used the Force to quicken himself, hoping this would ovveride the sluggishness of his wounded hand. With that he charged at Suspiria applying every last bit of strength he had in this attack. The two blades collided, sending sparkles flying around them. Seeing an opportunity Phoenix pushed away his master's saber and thrusted at her side.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria felt a searing pain in her side, as Phoenix's blade struck. she had turned in quartata so as not to take the full brunt of it. She went into recovery pulling back and into en garde stance.
Her side was throbbing, and she could tell her apprentice was also in pain. Time to end for the day. From tierce she went into a compound attack. A flurry of feints and parries followed tierce. Suspiria's blade glided down Phoenix's blade until the two were in opposition. Then in a prise de fer movement she flipped her lightsaber sending his flying through the air to land on the floor. Her blade ended up pointed at his neck. The practice was over.
She smiled at him and lowered her lightsaber. "You did well. We shall practice some more tomorrow. Your wounds require treatment. Go immediately to the medical area."
Darth Mortis
"Bah! Just minor flesh wounds" - Phoenix said, making tremendous effort not to wince - "As always a pleasure to learn from you, milady." The young sith bowed, picked up his weapon and made haste out of the training grounds. He felt a persistent burning ache in his left arm, perhaps it would be a good idea to apply some bacta to it. Phoenix sighed and proceeded to the medical area, analyzing the duel as he walked. Being a Sith apprentice was much more hard and dangerous than learning from a jedi, but their training yielded much better results. Phoenix's lips twisted into a smirk, positively he was very proud to have Adriel as his master but he would never show it openly of course.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria watched her apprentice leave the training area headed to go have Bacta applied to his wounds. She really was very proud of him though trying not to reveal it. She too would have need of bacta being applied.
She pondered on her training program and wondered if she could do better. She would consider it. Tomorrow they would begin practicing Teras Kasi.
Darth Mortis
Next day Phoenix woke up before daybreak, his wounds healed without even a scar. After a quick breakfast and morning exercises Phoenix left his small quarters and headed towards the training area. Since he was in a good mooed the young sith decided to walk rather than use any transport. With a slight smirk on his lips Phoenix strolled along the road, viewing the environs, he was alone, utility droids cleaning up the streets excluded, and he quite enjoyed it.
It took Phoenix some time to get to the grounds, but he was not in a hurry. Still no one was around. "Most rational apprentices must be resting right now" - the sith thought to himself and smirked. No matter, some excersices would do him good. Phoenix ignited his lightsaber and began practicing.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria entered the training ground not long after her apprentice. He was already there practicing. Most apprentices would have been still resting, after having been wounded. Here he was slashing at an invisible opponent.
She walked in and took out her own lightsaber and ignited it. "Today we are going to practice something new. As you may know I am also learning Teras Kasi, the combat form that Arden Lyn used. I would like you to learn it with me. We will also continue to study Makashi together."
Darth Mortis
Phoenix slightly bowed in greeting - "As you wish." At that he ignited his own saber, dispersing the shades around him with a bright blue light. "What must I do?" - he asked and flourished his saber in a salute.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria flourished her lightsaber at her apprentice, returning his salute.
"Learning Teras Kasi means thinking about lightsaber combat in a new way. 'Tesas Kasi' means steel hand in Galactic Basic. It draws upon your internal power to fuel it, rather than drawing power from around you. The famous or infamous Darth Maul was a practicioner of Teras Kasi as was Arden Lyn. It is an extremely flowing style as is Makashi, and is based in skill, rather than strength. It is also a form of hand to hand combat. It is about as Joclad Danva wrote mastery of one's self. Do you think that you can do that?
Darth Mortis
Phoenix grinned - "Milady, your will is my command, and I can do whatever you request. But of course as the subject is unknown to me I shall require aid." Unsure what to do he lowered his saber, awaiting insturctions.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria nodded at her apprentice. "First, I have found Teras Kasi flows better when you center yourself first. I sit in meditation and reach inside myself. Feel your passion and your anger. Think yourself powerful. Form a well inside yourself and fill it with those emotions. Once the well is full to the brim, we will use it to fuel our combat. Like so."
She sat on the floor and crossed her legs in a lotus position. She nodded for him to follow suit. She closed her eyes. "See a well inside yourself. Now think of yourself filling it with rage, anger and hate. Let it flow. Can you feel it?"
Darth Mortis
Phoenix sat in the lotus position as well. For about a minute he was silent, trying to concentrate on his emotions. Surprisingly enough he didn't feel any anger or rage, there was no call for those emotions outside the battle. Phoenix tried thinking about the Jedi, but even those memories didn't have the desired effect. He held no feeling for them, only bitter contempt. Phoenix's brow twitched with effort, this wasn't good at all. He opened himself to the Force, the Dark Side flowed freely in these walls it would surely help. Finally the young sith felt desired emotions, he imagined a well, slowly at first, drop by drop he began filling it with hatred. "I feel it, mistress" - Phoenix whispered.
Darth Suspiria
"Now keep drawing it up until you are full. Feel it pulse inside of you. The anger. Let the hatred swirl, until your sinews scream with it. The rage will follow. Hold on to it, do not let go. Your mind is thinking of it, your heart is pumping it, your spirit is alive with it. You are one with it!" Her cry was emphatic.
"Now, we duel!" Leaping to her feet she ignited her lightsaber. It's purple glow reflected her own violet eyes to even darker hue.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix jumped up, obeying some dark impulse he raised his hand, releasing a portion of accumulated hatred. Several arcs of lighting shot from his fingertips and sped at Darth Suspiria, only to be absorbed by her lightsaber. "What the?!" - Phoenix exclaimed and shrinked back. But as the understanding of what he just did came to the young sith his lips twisted into a smirk and he used the Force to pull both lightsabers to his hands. He activated both weapons with a familiar hiss. Wasting no time Phoenix leapt towards his master, landing several metres away from her and immediately charged, swinging both lightsabers so the attacks came simultaniously and from different angles.
Darth Suspiria
The power of having filled oneself like that was immense. Darth Suspiria could understand why Arden Lyn and Darth Maul had practiced Teras Kasi. She leapt high in the air above Phoenix's lightsabers and came down spinning like a top. Her lightsaber whirred, as the spinning air flowed over the blade. She parried first one of Phoenix's blades, then the other. In rapidfire motion the two of them fought, spurred to fierce combat by the wellspring of emotions.
"This is why I start each day in this form of meditation now Phoenix. What do you think of Teras Kasi?" She asked even as she continued to parry his lightsaber strokes.
Darth Mortis
"It is efficient. Do I really need to say more?" - Phoenix replied attacking once again. He continued to put relentless presure upon Suspiria's defence, trying to eliminate any posibility for her to counter-attack. All sabers moved so quickly that they merged into a single blur of red, blue and purple. Knowing the weakness Makashi style had, Phoenix applied as much of his strength as he could into every strike. Of course he did not forsake his own defences, with the opponent such as his master this would be just foolish, still Jar'Kai wasn't exactly the defence style so Phoenix continued to press the attack.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria fought fiercely, parrying stroke after stroke. The two duelists circled moving swiftly. She noted that Phoenix kept changing styles, but she stayed with Teras Kasi. The flowing movements were like a dance.
Using the Aryx slash, named after a Cerean creature she disarmed him of his red lightsaber. She somersaulted in a swift movement landing beside the fallen weapon which glowed its blade still ignited. Suspiria slid it with her foot across the training area and out of his reach. Then in a Forraderi movement she slid her blade under his and flipped upward.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix's second lightsaber flew up in the air, but even disarmed he wasn't about to give up. The manoeuvre his master just performed left her defenceless for a brief moment, the apprentice was quick to use this. Before Suspiria could return to the defensive stance Phoenix sent her flying by a powerful punch in the face and posterior Force push. This gave him only a few seconds, but it was enough. He caught the blue lightsaber, still ignited, while it was falling and twirled it in flourish. Unfortunately he had no time to recover the second saber so he charged forward, thrusting his saber at Suspiria's shoulder.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria felt herself flying backwards the punch to her face had sent her reeling for a second. As Phoenix thrusted his lightsaber at her shoulder she rolled out of the way. Furiously she looked around the training ground. She spotted something and grinned maliciously.
Then using force pull, she sent a work out bench hurtling at great velocity directly towards Phoenix.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix felt that his master used the Force to push something heavy, judging by the effort. Following the instinct he ducked down on the floor, the workbench flew barely an inch above him. Phoenix had to roll away quickly to evade incoming strike, he jumped on his feet, his mind rushed searching for way to seize the initiative as he parried Suspiria's vicious attacks. Hurling the same workbench was not an option, he didn't have enough power to do so without making himself extremely vulnerable. But perhaps it could yet prove useful, given a chance Phoenix leapt back to the workbench, swinging his saber in flight. The blade striked rays of sparks upon hitting the metal and cleaved several pieces of the bench. Using the Force, Phoenix sent a shroud of white-hot drops of molten metal along with the sharp splinters of what he managed to cut from the workbench at his master.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria saw the white hot shards of metal coming in her direction and put up her arm to protect her face. Some she batted away with her lighssaber, but some imbedded in her arm, sliding in like a warm knife into butter. She almost yelled in pain, but drew it inward instead to fuel her rage.
She leapt after Phoenix, fury etched in her face. The lightsaber whirled slashing and slicing as she went after him. Using a Teras Kasi Slashing Wampa movement she cut directly at his upper arm.
Darth Mortis
Seeing his master's anger Phoenix understood that he is in trouble, he had no choice but to recoil under the furious onslaught. For a while he managed to parry the initial flurry of attacks, but in an instant he felt familiar burning pain, again Suspiria's lightsaber left a wound, just a few inches lower than the one a day before. Ignoring the pain Phoenix charged at Suspiria, their lightsabers locked leaving the opponents face to face. "So is it customary for sith master and apprentice to fight as if they are bitter foes?" - the young sith asked looking in Suspiria's violet eyes.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria looked at Phoenix, and chose her words carefully. They spoke within the saber lock, eyes flashing. "This is how we as Sith train. Hatred fuels the flames of our passion to triumph over our enemies Phoenix. Rage is an inferno that must burn within our hearts. Without it we are nothing. Today you have learned the depths of that fire. Like the magma of a volcano, you must keep that flowing river dormant, yet ready to explode whenever needed. That was our lesson for today."
"Soon you will go on a mission. That fire must burn strong like a bonfire. Otherwise you will perish."
Breaking the saber lock, she turned and left the training ground.
Darth Mortis
As his master left Phoenix raised his eyebrow in confusion, the sith certainly have very unusual style of teaching. Still he trusted Suspiria enough to listen to her words, this lesson will not be forgotten. It would be a good idea to meditate, but first he would need to treat the wound on his upper arm and find his second lightsaber. Phoenix sighed and looked around, the red glow in the far corner of the chamber indicated that the weapon was there. With the Force he pulled it in his hand. The wound didn't cause much pain ,so Phoenix decided to practice on his own for a little while more before leaving the training grounds.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria pulled the metal fragments from her arm and applied a bacta solution to it. She then wrapped it in a bandage and flexed to be certain it wasn't too tight.
She sat in meditation for a while thinking. This shall be my apprentice's greatest trial up to the present. Will he survive it? He has done well so far and I am pleased with him. His skill and courage must carry him through.
She contacted him using the Force. Phoenix, prepare your weapons and pack a bag with clothes and whatever else you need. Get a good night's rest and tomorrow report to the the training ground at 0800 in the morning.
Darth Mortis
Upon receiving his master's message Phoenix immediately ceased practicing and made way to the medical area. A little bacta made short work of the wound on his upper arm, he didn't waste any more time than needed and proceeded with his schedule. First of all he got a week stock of military rations. Not the best food there is, but ideal for a mission, and Phoenix had no doubt that his master prepared something dangerous, and it is sure to be on one of the less pleasurable worlds.
Second he concerned himself with the equipment. After about half an hour of argument and a good deal of threats Phoenix managed to convince the commandant of one of imperial storehouses to give him a snowtrooper armour. Of course Phoenix wasn't sure that the world Darth Susupiria chose would be cold, but it never hurts to be ready for anything, not to mention the armour might come handy later on.
Finally after getting everything Phoenix returned to his quarters and checked if any of his weapons needed a maintenance. His lightsaber were built only a few days ago so they definitely were in good condition, the blaster pistol seemed workable as well. Making sure he didn't forget anything, Phoenix entered deep meditation to think over the events that transpired with him today. It was his usual ritual before he went to sleep.
The next day Phoenix arrived to the training grounds at the designated time, carrying a quite large knapsack. The young sith wondered what his master prepared for him, but he knew whatever it is, it will not be easy and probably it's incredibly dangerous. No matter, Phoenix didn't plan to run from the challenge.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria met Phoenix at the training grounds. She had arrived before him and watched him quietly for a few moments. Was he ready for this challenge? She hoped he was.
She walked over to him. "Phoenix, you are to go to the moon of Dxun at the planet of Onderon. There you will face many trials and challenges. You are an excellent apprentice. May you fare well in this endeavor. Remember the Dark Side is your greatest ally."
{{OOC: Go to the Official Missions Thread. Wait for the initial posting that will be put after mine.}}
Darth Mortis
After returning to Kuat from Onderon Phoenix took his time to rest. After all that transpired he thought that he earned this right. Still he didn't want to keep his master waiting for too long. After taking a cold shower, changing of clothes and a short 4 hour sleep the young sith made way to the training grounds. Knowing that Darth Suspiria could often be found honing her already formidable skills in lightsaber combat.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria had indeed been practicing as Phoenix had deduced. She turned as he entered the training ground. She had already heard from Darth Serratus.
"Welcome back my apprentice. Tell me about your adventure on Dxun. I am most interested."
Darth Mortis
Phoenix greeted his master with a bow. "Oh, milady, the short story is that - I've been fired upon by the most bizzare weapons in the Galaxy, I fought the vicious predators of Dxun, I fell from a height of more than 20 kilometres and lastly infiltrated a fortress full of savage Beast Riders... But I guess you wish to hear the details" - he said with a smirk. He caughed several times, clearing his throat. "This is a tale of deeds most brave and dangers too horrible to mention..." - in the next half an hour Phoenix spoke of what happened back on Dxun and Onderon, his speach was filled with theatrics and sometimes he used High Galactic, which made the young sith look like an overzealous and excited historian telling his acolyte about some great battle of the Ancient Sith Empire. Still Phoenix didn't exaggerate a thing, he didn't want to appear too arrogant. Finally after he finished the story and bowed his head slightly. "Thus it was, Mistress Suspiria. Although I am sure you already know this" - he said with a sly smile.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria listened as Phoenix regaled her with the tale of what had occurred on Dxun and Onderon. She already knew a great deal of it. When he finished she spoke. "I am not saying that you did not do well. But I have a question for you."
"When you were on the oxygen bridge, why did you flee the duel with Darth Serratus? You now need to duel someone in order to be promoted."
She wiped her face, which had rivulets of sweat running down it with a towel and waited for his reply.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix frowned for a brief moment, but then spoke calmly - "I was given a mission to reach Onderon's surface. If I fought with Darth Serratus there was a good chance that the oxygen bridge would close before I complete my task, and it would surely be so because even as I avoided the fight, I barely made it in time." The apprentice folded his arms and awaited for his master to speak. Even though her words were void of any reproof, this still felt as if he was accused in cowardice. And there were not many things Phoenix despised more than cowardice.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria gazed upon her frowning apprentice. She could tell that he was upset. She believed however that it was necessary to speak her mind. She wanted him to be capable of doing great things as a Sith.
"Sometimes Phoenix the choices we make are not simple. I understand completely why you did what you did. You also aided Darth Serratus with the Beast Riders which was not an easy task. Once in awhile we must sacrifice our own ambitions for the way of honor. If you had dueled and the bridge closed, I would still have considered that you had chosen the way of valor. I know that you made the logical and practical choice. I wanted to hear your explanation and it is perfectly sensible. We will just set you up to duel that is all."
She waited for him to speak.
Darth Mortis
Phoenix expression relaxed. "Yes, of course. Forgive me, milady" - he bowed slightly. "Do you have a suitable opponent in mind or should I just go to the Dojo and issue a challenge to any apprentice?"
Darth Suspiria
"I have an opponent in mind. I am waiting to hear whether they accept or not."
Darth Suspiria saw Phoenix visibly relax. He had best not get too relaxed she thought to herself.
"Come, sit on the floor with me. We shall meditate the Teras Kasi way for awhile."
She sat down on the floor and crossed her legs into a lotus position.
Suddenly her comm-link began to beep. She rose immediately and walked away from Phoenix. She listened and then responded.
"I can not thank you enough for your aid. We shall begin immediately."
Darth Suspiria walked back over to Phoenix and motioned for him to rise.
"Darth Serratus just contacted me. It is fitting that it should be so. You shall duel him, he has agreed to the challenge. It will complete what was begun on Dxun. Report to the dojo. I wish you good luck my apprentice."
Darth Mortis
"Thank you, Mistress" - Phoenix said and immediately left to the Dojo. Darth Serratus... This is not going to be easy, Phoenix pondered what new weapons will that sith use. A fight against a full-fledged sith seemed like a strange challenge, and Phoenix still couldn't understand what to think of it. At any rate this has to be done, the young apprentice placed one hand on the lightsaber hilt and dobuled his pace.
Darth Mortis
After applying bacta on his wounds and changing his clothes Phoenix returned to the training grounds. Locating his Master wasn't too hard, perhaps she was waiting. "I have returned, milady. And I am sure you have been informed about the results already" - Phoenix said guiltily and bowed his head.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria looked at Phoenix who had lowered his head. She grew stern. "Why are you hanging your head? Darth Serratus is a formidable opponent with an even more formidable array of weapons at his disposal. He has more experience than you as well. I myself lost a duel to the Dark Warrior, Prophet Crozeus. It is always the desire to win. We will go on from here with our training. I have entered your name for the trial of promotion to the Dark Lords of the Sith. We shall see what they say." She paced in front of him.
"Tell me what force forms you know and which ones you feel work best for you, and you prefer."
Darth Mortis
"I... I apologize, Mistress. I overreacted" - Phoenix said and raised his head. The last thing he needed right now is to irritate Suspiria. So he hurried to answer the question. "I rely more on the lightsaber combat than the Force, but I will tell what I learned from the jedi. The most noticeable forms are Force Mastery, Force Potency, Force Affinity and Force Channel. As I already said I rely on my blades, so the only form I use is the Force Channel, a slight boost to my Force powers at no expense can never hurt" - the young sith replied and clenched his hands behind his back.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria could tell that Phoenix was upset. His hands were clenched and his posture was flashing 'I am irritated' at her. "Do not be upset Phoenix. All of this is to aid you. To assist you in becoming a great Sith one day. Is that not what you came here to become?"
She walked up and down again. "I myself have been using Force Potency and Force Affinity. It takes time to become proficient at them. I believe that you would benefit from Force Potency. I would like you to go to the archives again and read all the information available on Force Potency. Then come back, describe it to me and show me how it is done."
Then her eyes crinkled a bit. "I too prefer the lightsaber. Also hand to hand combat at which I am skilled. But as Sith we have need to utilize these other things. Go now and do as I have asked. Then we will practice the forms."
Darth Mortis
"This will not be necessary, I still remember my lessons. Force Potency allows the user to perform devastating Force attacks, greatly enhancing one's their effects. But alas, it quickly tires the user. My old teacher did not enjoy this form, he thought it as 'unstable' and 'dangerous' as the most easy and effective way to use it would be to draw upon one's emotions, darker ones in particular" - Phoenix said, assuming a more relaxed posture, though his eyes still remained stern. "If you command, I will try this now."
Darth Suspiria
"We are going to practice force forms together. It is a necessary part of your training. Most Jedi do not use Force Potency. It is geared more to the darkside force users. It does drain you, but I am discovering something. Used with Force Affinity and Teras Kasi meditation makes it work better and is less tiring. Go home, and meditate for a long time tonight. Fill the well as we practiced to the brim. Come back here in the morning. We are going to practice then. Nothing lethal. Basic Force Powers."
She nodded at him, and sat down to meditate.
Darth Mortis
"Oh great, no cantina for me" - Phoenix thought, still he knew well that his training must be his highest priority. "As you wish" - he said to Darth Suspiria with a customary bow and left the training grounds. The sun almost descended, only a small blood-red semicircle still shined on the horizon. Phoenix strolled along the familiar path that lead from the apprentices' dormitory to the training grounds, lost in thought. He couldn't believe that his apprenticeship is coming to an end, it seemed only yesterday he arrived on Kuat, and now he is about to become a full-fledged sith. The time came for him to choose an Imperial Order he wishes to serve, and the young sith reluctantly admited that doubts still plagued him. Phoenix dismissed the thought and concentrated on what he has to do, there is still time to make the choice.
When Phoenix reached the dormitory first stars appeared in the skies. He would be a fool to miss a wonderful night like this, so Phoenix decided to meditate somwhere outside his rather modest appartment. After some deliberation the young sith decided that a roof of the dormotory will suit him fine. To get there wasn't too hard, especially after what he had to accomplish on Dxun. Phoenix sat down not far from the roof edge and crossed his legs, for a minute he simply reveled in the wind and the beauty of the starlit skies. The sith closed his eyes, opening himself to the Force. This will be a long night...
First beams of sun fell on Phoenix's face, forcing him to frown. Slowly he got up, stretching his limbs. After some quick exercises the young sith climbed down to the ground. The Force swirled around him, giving him almost unnatural confidence. "I should do this more often" - Phoenix thought to himself and made way to his quarters, he wanted to have at least a quick snack. One of the military rations that he took on his mission would do just fine. After this Phoenix made haste to the training grounds.
He was absolutely not surprised to find his master there. "Good morning, milady. I have done as you commanded and I am ready to practice. But there is a small request I have" - Phoenix said and quickly glanced at Suspiria. "Can you tell me about the leaders of Imperial Orders? I mean not their biographies, those can be found in the archives, but their personality and your opinion on them. I am sure you've met at least some of the honoured leaders..."
Darth Suspiria
"You would like my opinion of the Leaders of the Imperial Orders? That is difficult to express. Every person has good and bad things about them. Supreme Commander Marix it is said is an excellent Commander in battle. Supreme Prophet Praxeum is reclusive as most prophets are and I have only spoken with him twice. Both Shadow Protector Tarna and High Protector Adenn are businesslike and very proficient at what they do. Grand Inquisitor Prognie is pragmatic and elusive as are most who spend their lives in subterfuge."
"Then of course we have Emperor Shadow. It is he that you really serve. I find him to be a very competant ruler. Extremely intelligent and wise. A sage in my estimation. Slow to anger, and will reward when deserved. Why? Are you considering what order to join? If so I will ask each leader to speak with you a bit. Would you like that Phoenix?"
Darth Mortis
"Thank you, Mistress, but I do not want to distract them from their duties, Dark Lords must have a tight schedule indeed" - Phoenix smiled slightly. "And also I would like to hear the 'bad things' that could be said about the leaders, this is too very important as you of course understand, milady."
For a moment Phoenix mused and when he spoke again it seemed he is speaking more to himself than to his master - "The Inquisition seems to be a good choice for me. Rooting out traitors and rebels, bringing the jedi to judgement... But I am afraid that the reality is far from my romantic ideas. From what I hear baseness, betrayal and lies are quite common among the Order. Perhaps those are only rumors, but still I would prefer to be sure. The Church... I am no prophet or sage, so I do not consider it. Royal Guard is perhaps the most suitable choice. What greater honour is there than to protect the Emperor or his most trusted servants? And then there is the Military... I always found war to be a beautiful thing, horrible yes, but beautiful still. When I see the mighty warships, or pefect ranks of white-armoured stormtroopers my heart is filled with pride, an the possibility to lead those men into battle simply takes away my breath. Bane's blood! Sometimes it's so hard to make a choice... I am sorry, Mistress, I seem to be a little confused."
Darth Suspiria
"I wish you to make up your mind for yourself, uninfluenced by me. I will not be the one to speak about 'bad'. You must decide in your own mind what you desire. I will set you up to speak to Supreme Commander Marix and Shadow Protector Tarna. I am sure they can spare you a few minutes of their time."
She unclipped her lightsaber and sat down on the floor. "Let us meditate together and begin our practice."
Darth Mortis
"Of course. I am grateful, milady" - Phoenix said and sat down, crossing his legs. "Should I use Teras Kasi technique again?" - he asked.
Darth Suspiria
"Yes use Teras Kasi. Fill the well with the Force. Draw from yourself and feel anger, rage, fury." She sat filling herself, feeling her fists began to clench.
After a little while when she felt full to bursting she cried aloud "Now rise and let us begin!"
She leapt to her feet and took the Potency Form position she preferred, ready to strike.
Darth Mortis
This time the Teras Kasi meditation came to Phoenix rather easily, and when Darth Suspiria ordered to begin, he was ready. He opened his eyes, and leapt up, prepared to fight. Phoenix concentrated his anger, turning it into bright sparkles of lightinig around his rught palm and unleashed it, simultaniously he waved his left hand, sending a Force wave that hurled a passing utility droid at his master.
Darth Suspiria
Darth Suspiria felt strong and full of the Force. As the droid flew at her, she used Force Push to hurl it back at Phoenix. Then in a move that surprised even her she wielded fire. Bright flames erupted in her hand and focusing she created a circle in the air. She sent the circle of flame spinning towards Phoenix.
It trailed a crimson tail behind it, touching the floor and whipping out like a flagella
