Murmurs

Chapter One: Murmurs

“An idea, like a ghost, must be spoken to a little before it will explain itself.
- Charles Dickens

“The son of world renowned, self-made billionaire and owner of Bionex and Spartan Industries Michael McClain died today. John McClain was only 26 years old when he tragically succumbed to what the doctors are calling a rare heart disorder that was only recently named as Jackson Disease for its first recorded first John Jackson.” The television news reporter stated in front of the Bionex building. “Mr. McClain’s public affairs office here at Bionex released a statement stressing the owner’s grief and asking that all memorials be given as a gift to the giver’s charity of choice.

The computer screen on the desk displayed a Google search page entitled Bionex. The mouse pointer moved across the screen, past the company’s website and over the Wiki-What? entry. “Let’s see what the people think.” A voice spoke. Wiki-What? was an offshoot of the famous or infamous Wikipedia online encyclopedia that focused on the short and sweet public knowledge.

Bionex is a medical research giant, founded in 1983 by Michael McClain, third generation Irish immigrant. The company focuses on physical enhancements for longevity, producing the most successful artificial heart, fondly named The Pump by the medical industry. Their motto is to ‘fix the flaws’ in the human physiology with the ‘technology of tomorrow today’. It is highly conspired that Bionex works on secret projects for the US Military to enhance the average soldier’s abilities.” The voice read out. “Well it appears that we have suffered the great loss of a government’s tool’s son.” It spoke to no one. “Now then, Spartan Industries.

Quickly the Wiki-What? page of Spartan Industries appeared.Spartan Industries is a pioneer in the field of research and development for any weapon, armor, vehicle, boat, plane, and about anything else the military might ever need.” A grunt. “A double tool. Not every day you get one of those.

A loud siren sounded from the television as shots from a police raid last night were broadcasted live. “Yet another failed attempt to capture the elusive terrorist known only as The Ghost was filmed live last night in efforts to spread awareness of the law enforcements efforts to capture the threat to American safety and wellbeing. All recording of any type was not allowed prior to and during the raid, but only after.

“Still trying to catch me?” The Ghost said to the television. “Good luck.

Design

Chapter Two: Design

"The function of design is letting design function."
- Micha Commeren

Two Months Earlier

“General, are you ready, sir?” John McClain asked Major General Robert H. Fowler of the United States Air Force.

“Indeed.” Robert replied. Robert was a black general, one of the highest in the American Military infrastructure, and certainly the most successful. Born in Connecticut he joined the Air Force Junior ROTC in high school as an after school activity, and had been fascinated. He went on to join the Air Force, and then onto college to study physics, chemistry, aerospace engineering, and eventually computer science. The 48 year old General had served a long and fruitful career in development of high tech air planes, missiles, space craft, and communications equipment. He was the national expert, and had even served as the President’s own advisor on such matters until the President opted not to run for reelection.

“Captain, you may begin.” John ordered. Colonel John McClain was yet another military man, having served in the Marine Recon Force until joining his father in controlling the family business. He was given a rank in the Air Force when Spartan Industries began work on a top secret project that required ranking clearance. He had often been referred to as a real Tony Stark, having invented several key components to Spartan Industries’ Turbo Jet Engine (TJE)—which launched jet technology into the future—by the time he was 14. Unlike the Tony Stark character, he joined the Marines after college, earning a triple major in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, and Business. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, weighing in at 190lbs, John was hardly average. His hair was neatly trimmed around his ears and kept this way, much to the dismay of the Public Relations office that kept pushing for him to follow the latest fashions and trends. His green eyes were almost always lit with a twinkle, as if he knew some inside joke that everyone else had not been made aware of yet.

“Thank you, sirs.” Captain Jackson passed out folders to the attending General, Colonel, and engineers from Spartan. “What we have here is a complete spec set of the latest fighter jet, the F-40. The F-40, as our pilots like to say, is mainly just a casing for the TJE, with a seat attached. It is the latest in stealth fighter technology, combing the three main paths to stealth: speed, altitude, and radar diffusing design and materials. With the use of not just one, but two TJE's, the fighter can reach in excess of MACH-8, well above the current fighter’s standards, especially foreign forces. The SF-40 is designed to withstand a suborbital flight; making it virtually unseen by any ground based radar, and placed well above any anti-aircraft emplacements and missiles.

The engineers made comments on the designs, questioning why they took certain approaches to the design, and reviewing other design choices that made the fighter stealthier than its predecessors. The incorporation of new technology made the plane one of a kind amongst the other craft of the world, second to none.

The next agenda item was presented by John, the next generation bionic enhancements. “General, I give you Bionex’s latest joint project with Spartan, the Storm Trooper. With augmentations to their skeletal structure, organs, and nerves using nano-bots, the subject will be as close to physically invincible as possible. They will have complete control over their bodily functions, heart, lungs, nerves, bones. They can stop their heart for short periods of time to fake death if they need to. The enhancements allow them to withstand more punishment with less energy expended. After the procedure is completed, the subject also has the option of using an outer suit that will triple his power. This suit is much larger, and would only serve to protect the subject from large scale attacks, and is not recommended for intelligence and counter intelligence use, except in extreme cases of danger.

Once again the engineers mulled over the project, which was their own, critiquing their own work to make it better.

“When do we begin testing?” The General asked.

“Later this week.

“You have volunteers?”

“One, sir.

“You get the green on both projects. Now I have a JCS to attend. I’m sure you don’t mind me borrowing a TJE equipped plane?”

“As long as you don’t insist on flying it this time. Let the pilots do their job.

“I’m a General. If I want to fly, I fly.” Fowler growled as he walked out the door to the elevator that would take him to the hangar level. The Spartan complex hangar was much like an aircraft carrier, holding the planes below deck and using massive elevators to bring them up to the surface before a launch. All pre-taxi checklists were taken care of underground, reducing the time the plane spent on the surface immobile.

“That you do. That you do.” John replied as the General walked away.

“Captain, tell the Doctors we begin the surgery as soon as possible. I will be ready when they say it is time.

“Yes sir.

John headed to his office, wondering if he was making the right choice by electing to undergo the surgery himself.
