This is more for informational purposes. I know this subject matter is very contentious as I have experienced on other forums. I have a dedication to the process and believe firmly in its importance. Our election process especially for the Presidency of the United States is something we should as good Americans understand with clarity. Exercising our right to vote is critical. Everyone who is old enough should consider doing so a duty of citizenship, an obligation not to be ignored.
As we all know, the election is only six days away. The Presidency is decided not by popular vote, but by the electoral college. 270 electoral votes are needed to secure our nation's highest office. Each state has a varying number of electoral college votes, contingent upon population numbers. Conventional party wisdom has always been that there are 'particular pathways' to the necessary 270 vote total. This election cycle however is different from all others preceding it.
For the first time in the history of our nation a candidate has set up three distinct pathways to potential victory. That candidate is Barack Obama. On November 5, 2008 we will know whether it was folly or wisdom to do so. The first pathway leads through the Eastern seaboard where he can possibly win Virginia, N.C. or Florida. The second pathway leads through the central states of Ohio and Missouri. The third through the western states of Colorado, Nevada and NM.
At present the map is as follows.
Obama: CA, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA are fairly certain. (175 electoral votes)
Leaning Obama: CO, IA, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NM, PA, VA, WI. (111 eleven votes)
If the map stays as present and the leaning states follow their polling trends, Obama has 286 electoral votes and McCain 163.
On election night look for the following. If Obama wins VA or FL, we are all asleep by midnight. If not the battle moves west to OH and MO. Obama wins one of those two, we are asleep by 1:00am. If not then it moves further west and it will be a long night. In order to win the pundits believe McCain has to 'run the table' of those leaning his way and the toss up states. As well as take one of those trending towards Obama.
It is all very interesting, and no matter who wins it will be an historic night for the United States of America. We will either have our first African-American President or the oldest person ever elected and the first female Vice President. I hope everyone will watch and take an interest in the outcome.
