Over the past few years, there has been a surge and massive build-up of attention and concern over our planet. The result of which has been a highly concentrated focus within the market and production on “Green Products”, that should help stave off the violent “End of the World” that some profess to be the result of Global Warming.

  1. The media and other such proponents of “Immediate Action” and “Complete Changes In Man’s Lifestyle” state that the warming of the earth is directly related to the actions of mankind over the years. They point to greenhouse gas production and pollution, cars, power plants, and the like. They propose radical changes to our energy sources, our consumption habits and the very way we live our lives, pointing to an increase of violent weather to prove their “Apocalyptic View” of our future.

  2. Another side of the story is of a more natural story. That Global Warming is part of a natural cycle of the earth. That the warming and cooling trends have been happening for millennia, i.e. the Ice Ages and their respective warm periods. They would point out that man is not the significant impact on the climate as others would lead you to believe. That man-kind has not create the “Apocalypse” of Group Number 1.

  3. And yet a third, and perhaps less known view or side is of complete denial. This side argues that Global Warming is nothing but propaganda by corrupt politicians, and also an elaborate marketing scheme by today’s economic leading businesses that would profit from an environmentally-concerned consumer. They point to certain events in the world’s recent history that merely make it look like the earth is getting warmer, they suggest that the media and politicians twist scientific data to fit their needs, leaving out integral parts of the research, to put the public into a state of fear that will encourage the common man, to support radical changes led by that politician or to buy radical “green” products made by the benefiting companies, or to be completely at the will of the media.

What is your view?
All responses are expected to be lengthy and backed-up by quotes [preferred] or hyperlinks to prove your point, and fully explained. This is not meant to be a few sentences of response, but rather an educated and intelligent discussion and debate.

I did a report on this in World Geography.

I'm 99.9% sure it is happening, but even if it isn't, why is helping the environment a bad thing? Like, ever?

You did a recent report on this? When did the data start getting "warmer"? Around 1991-3?

In 1991 the Soviet Union fell, and along with it many weather stations in the north. Without these colder readings, the world's average temperature went up. Not because of greenhouse gases, but because of a change in the sample set of data.
Another reason is the growth in the size and number of cities. Asphalt and Cement give off more heat than grass, so the temperature recording stations that used to be near grassy, rural areas that are now near/in cities will record higher local temperatures and thus increase the global average.

Helping the environment is not a bad thing, but lying for political and profit is.

Actually, I found the c02 levels of the last 700,000 years or so.

You might doubt the source. It's never been known to be that reliable.

We'll pretend that the source is reliable for now:

You see that there are patterns, trends, in the CO2. They rise and fall. In the past, there was less then more, then less, then more.

Today, we are on the "up" trend. It just happens to be higher because of Human existence, but that does not mean that humans are causing it.

Greenland was once a paradise, then it was icy. Now it is returning to its warmer state. The story about the Vikings naming it Greenland to confuse people is false. Greenland was actually "green" and inhabitable, then it turned to its more recent state.

Have polar bears been dying in the past at this rate?

Sure, there are natural cycles, but this cycle has been greatly amplified by human activity.

Global warming? To be honest, I'm not very informed about it. However, I do believe that it's real....but it's effects and threat exaggerated? You bet.

It's a natural process, without which we could not survive. However, due to the emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, H2O, CH4) by humans, it is increasing and making the Earth about 0.5 degrees warmer.

So don't worry then.
