Darth Sidious was one of the most important Sith in history. The Sith were presumed extinct for over a millenium. He and his master Darth Plagueis were the only two Sith for a great amount of time. But Sidious didn't want to be second to his master, so he murdered him in his sleep.
Sidious became known as Palaptine, a government man on Naboo. His plan was to slowly make his way up the Governmental standings. When the Trade Federation Blockade caused the Queen of Naboo flew to Couruscaunt for his aid, Palpatine found his change to remove Chancellor Valorum out of his "seat".
Palpatine presented his ideas to The Queen where she insisted a new Chancellor and Valorum was voted out.
With Palaptines new position as Chancellor he quickly promised order and justice to the republic. He rose to be well liked by the people of the government. Little did they know behind the mask of politics was the Sith Lord, Darth Sidioius.
The stealthy Sith Lord soon was granted emergency powers to accept a clone army being built on Kamino. The army of clones was created by Darth Tyranus' friend Sifo-Dias who was dillusional, by Sidious' doing, and ordered a clone army. The army turned the tide of the wars and the Jedi and generals soon learned to trust these army men. Little did they know it was a trap.
Anakin Skywalker was part of Palpatines trap. Palaptines' identity was revealed first to this young Jedi. Sidious then promised him that he could help Anakin preserve his wife Padme's life. The deal with the devil was done.
With Anakin, now known as Vader under Sidious' command, he ordered the Order of 66. The Order to kill all of the Jedi. With the clones turned and the Sith rising again, Sidious took control of the Republic and turned it into the first Galactic Empire, which strived for many, many years.
In the midst of all of these feats Sidious managed to gain control, trust and power from his enemies. He took on 3 apprentices which also helped him. And the root of all this, he was patient.
It took him many years of planning, but it was all based on patience and cover.
